Setting Change- Can ITrade in Old Setting?

Hi guys,

I came to you when we had just purchased our diamond. It was a liittle too late...but...as it turns out, I got a good diamond. Anyway, we are getting married in a few months and unbeknowst to my fiance..I want to change the setting

I blame this site!!! LOL I am the one that chose the setting in the first place, but after reading these boards...I want a different one!! LOL Long story short, I have a 1.14 G VS-2 diamond with baguettes on the side. Here is a link to the riing in a previous post:

I like it, but now I think the band is too thin for my size 8.5 finger (some more pics showing this later in the above thread). I also like other settings..specifically many of the Tacori settings that are copies of the real thing or just a 6-prong ring with a simple diamond band. My questions are this, will a dealer accept my setting as a trade-in towards the purchase of another? Can I buy a settiing on-line and have a jeweler here in NYC remove my diamond and place it in the new setting? Any suggestions for any live vendors here in NYC that could do this would be helpful. I am looking for a setting that looks like a few Tacori copies that I have seen or even a basic simple Tiffany 6 prong setting. Any help that you can give would be great. I want to get all of the info before I break the news to my fiance.

I don''t live in NYC so I can''t help you there, but I can tell you what I did. I had a diamond ring that I got from my Mom (who divorced Dad). I used this to trade-up to the ring I ended up getting. The jeweler did not have problems taking the old ring to upgrade--in fact, we got a substantial discount on the new ring because of the size of the diamonds & the karat weight of the gold in the old ring. I could''ve had everything re-set but I wanted a more intricate design.

usually what jewelers will do is give you scrap value credit towards a new purchase, but the best way to earn a little more, is just sell it unmounted, You''ll get a little more than scrap value.

Ditto D&T. You might be able to resuse the baguette though. Have you thought about remaking your ring in the same style with a wider shank?

Most jewelers will be able to recycle the materials and give you credit for them against whatever else you want but it’s not nearly as much money as people tend to expect. If the ring is new, or relatively new, talk to the jeweler who sold it in the first place and see if you can make a deal to trade it against something more to your liking.

Thank you all...first, I should say that I am not a fan of the jeweler whom we brought the ring from although we got a decent deal. I would never go back there. I had not thought of trying to sell the setting myself...so thank you for telling me that.
The ring is only 5 months old or so.

Dreamer...I didn''t think of re-making the ring with a wider shank. That is a good idea...the band widith is just too small for my finger. If I have to...I can just do that. Actually...I now think I want a setting that is an eternity band setting all the way around or at least 3/4....so I will need an entirely different setting. I saw a setting on BlueNile that I like but they said that they have a new policy that will not allow the purchase of a setting alone except in a few circumstances.

I will visit a few jeweleres and see if I can find a setting that I like...thank you all so much.
