Hello,

I found a setting from James Allen that I like and found a diamond from GOG (good old gold). Would you buy the diamond and send it to James Allen to set or buy the setting and send it to GOG to set.

Any help would be appreciated.

Steve

I bought them both separately then have local jeweler put them together. buy insurance for it.

Either way but you would need to check on who would assume responsibility for the diamond and if neither would ( as is usual for diamonds that they did not sell) then you would need to try to get insurance. Damage is rare with round diamonds but not unheard of.

In this case, both will take responsibility for the stone. GOG as they sold it, and JA, which is only one of two vendors I know of that will cover a stone they didn''t sell. However, JA will charge a setting fee, normally 100.00. So I''d have GOG do it as it would be free.

What setting did you get from JA? If it''s one of the designer settings (Danhov etc.) JA would most likely have them set the stone. I purchased my diamond from Abazias and my setting from JA and JA had me send my stone directly to Danhov so they could make my ring and set the stone. I believe Ellen is correct that it cost about $100 for them to do this.

Good point on designer settings.

And now that I''m fully wake and thinking about it, it wouldn''t be free at GOG either (if the setting is one of JA''s own) as the setting is not from them. It would only be free when you get both from the same vendor. But again, both will cover the stone.

Sorry about that! *chuggs coffee*

i''m pretty sure pearlmans will also cover the stone if you buy a setting from them as well..

Right, that was the "other one".

I thought I was going to be in a similar situation. What I thought I would do is have the ring and diamond sent separately to me and then take them to an appraiser/gemologist and pay him/her to set it. I figured an examination of the diamond out of the setting was probably the better way to go if I could do it. But perhaps you have already had the diamond sent for your review and took it to a gemologist.
