Setting Advice

Hi everybody,

does anybody have a recommendation for a jeweler to recreate this setting? Unfortunately this setting was made by JAR (Joel Arthur Rosenthal) who doesn’t really work with “normal” people. I love how the setting is so simple and hugs the diamond.
I find Erika Winters to be the only jeweler to be able to make prongs so slender and beautiful. I’m just not in love with Milgrain.
Does anybody know of a talented goldsmith who can achieve a similiar setting? I should add that I’m thinking of this setting without the pavé work.
But maybe I’m crazy and this setting isn’t special and easy to recreate?

Thank you for your suggestions. I’ve studied both Steven Kirsch and Maytal Hannah and I both don’t find them to have the fluidity in their settings.
With Steven Kirsch and Maytal Hannah I just can add VC and Leon Megé onto the list. But I’m really looking for a new name or are those THE best in the US?

Not sure what “the best” means to you. Steven Kirsch created a ring for my friend, I did most of the communication so I can say that he was easy to work it, very quick and his style is very similar to what I think you are looking for. We have seen some lovely creations from Maytal as well, so definitely worth reaching out. VC sometimes works with outside stones and sometimes doesn’t. LM is an absolute no to me (go check out SMTB). At a lower price point, DK can also probably create this setting, but will likely require more guidance.

I love that JAR ring and have coveted it for a long time. I’m curious about the stone you are going to set in it, much of the grace of that setting has to do with the shape and size of the stone. I‘m pretty sure this ring requires hand forging.

Do you follow Alex Parks on insta? His settings have that lovely simplicity and subtlety. Quite a surprise really. Probably a different level of craftsmanship but the aesthetic: yes.

You are right there isn’t “The Best” in anything just the best dir different expectations and budgets. I just gave Steven Kirsch’s Instagram a third look and he does have beautiful settings! I will definitely put him on my list.
I love Maytal Hannah and her price point is unbeatable, I’m just not 100% convinced of the flow in some of her designs.
Yes even if LM could replicate JAR I wouldn’t give him a penny.

I’ve been thinking about that as well. Even if I had a cushion that big and colorless I’m not sure I would have the girdle so exposed. The stone I’m thinking of is round and about 10mm.

I'm guessing but I don't think VC would make the prongs that thin, or maybe even the sides with pave. I think the skinniest he will go when pave is involved is just below 2mm whenever pave is involved, but not close to 1.5. But of course I could not say for sure. You could ask him. But if you're not interested, nevermind.

And as to difficulty, I think for a skilled artisan, it's probably not super "difficult" to get something close. But when people like JAR make them, there is probably all sorts of super anal detailed...stuff that they do that others do not. And it probably isn't stuff you can see with the naked eye or understand unless they explain it to you. How important is that stuff to you?

that's a beautiful setting but agree with you on the girdle, it's a chip waiting to happen imho.
