I have a pretty good idea of the setting I want for my violet sapphire. I was wondering it's better to get this completely custom or look around for a similar pre-made setting to buy separately? If pre-made, how can I be sure the gem will fit the setting?

Here is a pic of the setting I want (but in white gold). Anyone know a jeweler with settings of a similar design? I can't seem to find anything close.

i think david klass would be a good choice

i love this style of setting. there is a particular vendor that created a custom setting for a PSer but i can't think of them off the top of my head. Anyway, you would want to purchase the stone first and have the setting made to fit your stone.

here is something similar, a little more organic:

They do beautiful custom work:

Thanks all! I already have the stone. Sounds like custom is the way to go so it can fit the stone exactly. I though maybe getting something pre-made and then putting the stone it was an option, but seems like not the way to go.

Since I know exactly what I want, how important is it to go to one the recommended jewelers? Wouldn't any jeweler that does custom work be able to do this?

NO. A jeweler that offers custom work will not necessarily be able to do GOOD custom work. it's like asking a friend that CAN paint to paint one room in your house with stripes and then a have a professional do the same thing in another room. do you think they will necessarily be of the same quality? That said, there are several vendors here on PS that could replicate this setting depending on your budget.

I think i found the exact setting BUT BE does not set outside stones:

I think the setting from GreenLake i posted is VERY close, you just want daintier prongs vs the tab prongs pictured. Remember that the price quoted is platinum, WG will be less expensive and they do set outside stones. it's worth asking for a quote:

I just have seen some of his custom work of that style, so he can definitely do it. Perhaps many could, but since it's not returnable, I just try to find vendors that has done something that looks similar. My logic is it helps me trust that I will enjoy the final product. It's ultimately up to you! David Klass just makes settings like this for an incredible price too. Definitely cheaper than many of my local vendors even.

CVB Inspired Design and LoveAffairDiamonds have several settings with similar elements as this and would be another custom option (I think both accept outside stones).

Thanks all! I think custom is the way to go so I can get exactly what I want. I live in SF and did a search on pricescope for recommended h&m jewelers. Seems like Joe Escobar is the most recommended. Does this match the style that they have experience in making? Can't really tell by their website. Derco seems to get mixed reviews on PriceScope. Don't see others recommended on here even though according to a yelp search, there are tons that have great reviews!

Derco is a very good traditional jeweler. I've had pieces from them. Well made. But for a more ornate gold piece like the one you're wanting I would probably go with Joe Escobar.
