dear all,

i have a diamond ring but it is not in the setting that i wanted.

however i chance upon a setting that i really like. the price is really cheap but it is not platinum or white gold.

it is actually 1% platinum and the rest is sterling silver.

Do you all think setting a diamond in such a ring setting (that is neither platinum or gold) a good idea?

I have had only one diamond in sterling. It was a sturdy ring where the diamond was kind of channel set. The diamond itself was around 3-4 points. I wouldn''t ever dream of doing a costly stone of any type (diamond or otherwise) in sterling. Sterling is very cheap and probably why it looks like an awesome deal to you. In reality it is a soft metal that in my experience bends and loses it''s shape easily. Not safe enough to put any stone you love in. sterling has its place and I own pieces, but never for "fine jewelry"

I would not set a ring in silver. Have you thought of palladium? It is much cheaper than gold and platinum and won''t turn yellow like white gold sometimes does.

Durability might be an issue for silver for everyday wear.

I have read that silver prongs are not considered strong enough. Bezel set in silver may be ok but I would not do it in a prong setting.
(I probably would not do it at all)

Ditto. It would make me too nervous! Plus, I don''t really love the light-weight feel of silver.

thank you all for your replies.

I understand that silver setting and diamond do not really match...

however i really love the design as it is like the Tiffany replica...
i''m on a really tight budget and looking for a tiffany 6 prong replica. the prices online (such as excel diamonds, really exceeded my budget way too much)
I tried going to jewelry workshop and ask for quotations, their prices are also above my budget.

this ring design is perfect but the metal is not

any recommendations on ebay where i can get tiffany mounts for a lower cost?

Thanks

If you share your budget we can try to help you find something more durable that fits in your budget.

i''m rather embarrassed to share my budget as its really low.

I''m looking at anything below $300.

Thanks

I used to have a travel ring in this setting from American Set on eBay... If you have someone soften the knife edge a little so it is more comfortable, it was a pretty ring.

I would check a local jeweler. I had a similar one made (the band was thinner though) for under $300 in white gold.
