Do I have to set them in special settings for cabs, or can I set them (if the domes are low enough) in settings for facetted gems with prongs?

Thanks!
Layla

Layla,

What are you going to set? I forget!!!!!

not sure, but when I talked with Tripps.com and Sally they asked if it was for a faceted gem or Cabs so I''m assuming that it may matter.

I''m looking for a replacement turqouise to ''re-create'' the ring that was stolen from me. My grandmother doesn''t know I was robbed, and for some reason my mother is adamant that she not find out. SO... I''ve called a couple of our vendors who recommended a place where I can get some turqouise that should be nice material from American mines and I''m thinking of ordering a few cabs and just picking the one I like best to set. But the thing is I do NOT want to spend much on the setting AT ALL and there are some ebay settings that are very close to the setting of the original ring, close enough that my grandmother wouldn''t notice the differences. But they aren''t specifically for cabs, they have prongs (original ring was prong set too) so... I''m wondering if there is a reason this wouldn''t work.

Layla, the cabs that I saw that were beautifully set, were on James Meyers website.

Cabs are usually very top heavy and rounded; some also have a big belly or barely any (flat bottomed). Depending on your cabochon, it may not fit into a standard prong setting.

i have many cabs set.....but they are very large and set in silver. when i say large, i mean they cover my finger from knuckle to knuckle. they are bezeled. this is the maker:

however, i don''t see any pictures of anything quite like my rings, many of which are very high domed.

Yep, it is possible to prong set cabs in a facetted stone setting. However, a large cab or one with a very steep angle will be more difficult. The notching of the prongs is a bit different as well. Before choosing your stone, could you show them to your jeweller and ask him which would be best for prongs?

MZ - I just took a look at his site, and he has a wonderful way of letting the stones sing. Gorgeous work. Can you show us your collection sometime? I''m sure it would be helpful to others who are looking to have cabs set.

That''s what I''m thinking. I''m looking at setting that look like they have right sort of basket (something to rest on) and with tall prongs. And I''ve also asked for a ''squat'' cab, instead of a high domed one. We''ll see.

FlyGirl, will try and take some pictures one day.....but not this week. i''m not sure that i can do some of the pieces justice.

btw, both my husband and i have rings utilizing the poppy jasper featured in one of the bracelets..........

ps Gypsy, do you have a picture of the ring that was stolen?

I couldn't find one, MZ. But can describe it easily. 8 x 10 cab turqouise in four prong halo setting with millgrain around it. A plain shank with a thick double banding (perpencicular to the shank) at the connection to the halo. To be honest. I hated the setting. With a passion.

Here are a few I'm considering. I'm not set on 8 x 10 for the cab. I'm haven't worn the ring around grandma in a WHILE so I'm not sure she'd remember the exact size.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&item=180376805737 a very heavy setting but I actually think it's nicely executed and will pair well with a cab. Plus it's got SUPER long prongs, which is a plus with the cab. Plus it take the right size center. And it's got a halo, so it's similar to the original setting, though frankly I like it a lot better (though I generally prefer much more delicate designs).

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&item=370224575356 It would hold a cab well, but I'm just not thinking it's a good match with the pendant. it's kinda contemporary and the pendant setting is very classic. Still.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&item=260441723562 my favorite of all the settings for a turqouise. I am wondering what it would cost to have it made for a larger center (but still keep the side four petal design the same size). I think it would look fabullous with a larger basket and maybe some milgrain added to lighten and brighten it a bit.

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT&item=260442923496 My second favorite. I have been watching this setting for a while. But I think it would be best suited for a brilliant cut. And I've been wanting one of Barry's ovals for it, honestly. I don't know if I can find a 9x7 cab though. It seems to be 8 x 10 or 6x8.

Here''s an 8 x 10 mm turquoise cab, Gypsy. Link
