Hi, I was looking at rings yesterday with my gf, who saw a HOF diamond ring that she absolutely loved. The $19,500 price tag for a 1.5 carat, I color, SI1 clarity seems outrageous to me, however. Although I did not get the name of the HOF setting at the store, I looked at the HOF website and it appears to have been the Purely Bridal V Gallery solitaire setting. The link to the setting is: http://www.heartsonfire.com/shop-jewelry/rings/engagement-rings/purelybridalfourprongvgallery.aspx

Does any one have any suggestions for where I might be able to find a similar setting that is not HOF?

If it helps, the thing that she likes about the HOF setting is the fact that the prongs appear to be a single piece with the ring itself. I hope I am describing it accurately, but it is almost as if the prongs "flow" from the ring. I am having a hard time finding that aspect in another setting.

I don't think the last one you posted is at like the original ring you posted. It has a separate head that looks disjointed from the rest of the flow of the setting. Unless she saw this and loved it I would be leery of this style, as it just seems to lack the same fluidity as the one you first posted.
There have been some lovely settings posted (though I humbly agree that the Minnie is closest to the one you first posted). Most importantly, you are much more likely to get a great stone (rivaling HOF quality) from Brian Gavin or Whiteflash for a fair price. The jeweler you posted with the last setting does not seem to have much available in the way of ideal cuts, and does not have the certifications or detailed measurements of the diamonds posted so that you can use the HCA screening tool. You may be able to get this information, but definitely check back and post the stone info before buying. BGD, WF, and several of the other vendors often used on PS offer much more information and some specialize in super ideal hearts & arrows stones cut for maximum performance, which carries a price premium (though usually a LOT less than HOF) but comes with some level of comfort knowing what you are getting.

I am confused by the following statement, "The jeweler you posted with the last setting does not seem to have much available in the way of ideal cuts . . . ." My understanding that an "ideal" cut was the AGS equivalent of a GIA "excellent" cut. Nearly all of Barmakian's 1+ carat diamonds appear to be GIA, rather than AGS, graded, which seemed to me to be the reason that they did not have many "ideal cuts" available. Am I mistaken? Is an AGS graded diamond preferable to a GIA?

GIA is fine. But the GIA Excellent category is far broader than AGS Ideal cut, and AGS grades light perfomance and GIA does not. So with GIA Ex stones, we use a screener to narrow down the best ones and recommend getting an idealscope image to see if the stone has leakage. A lot of jewelers won't provide that because they don't want to admit that all GIA Ex are not equal.

I would recommend the BG Sholdt Minnie with one of his signature diamonds, personally. That is a fine quality setting and much more elegant to me than the last one you posted. Not to mention, superior diamond quality.
