I'm just starting a thought process for a new pendant I think I want - a blue topaz center stone with sapphire halo. I'm wondering about what metal I want to use though. Can sapphire or diamond halos be safely set in sterling silver?? Or does this sound like a project that should be set in gold??

Certainly, it can be safely set in silver! Given the softness, though, I would lean towards a bezel over a prong setting.

Thanks Circe and Min! Yes, I was thinking I want bezel set for the center stone and I suppose halos can also be bezel set too! Perfect. Thanks! Good to know I can go either way.

I think it's more a question of how often you'll wear it. It can be safety set (as other posters mention) but you have to to watch out for things like tarnishing...all metals have pros and cons.
