Sent off Early Modern Brilliant to Single Stone

Okay, here's more info, but no pics, yet. Heather was talking about milgraining the bezel which in my mind was a requirement, then she said "You know, we could milgrain the top of the bezel and put a diamond border all the way around just under the bezel." "Yes, please," I squeaked out. You can do that? Didn't even know I wanted that. And come to think of it, twosanguinehearts had that too, though this version is going to be quite a bit lower. CADS they are acomin', patience, patience...and also, that Lang's setting is called a quad bezel. I learned that from a Jeweler's Mutual rep. I liked it a lot but was afraid it might catch on things.

Psych!

A ring with the diamond border as an example. This is a Frankenring made with
my favorite SS parts. Let's hope the disparate elements come together better
than Dr. Frankenstein's creation.

That is very interesting about his name for the cut. In fairness, some people only have two labels for a diamond! LOL MRB and OEC. I recall that Demelza's stone was given a few different names. I think EGL called it a Transitional and Dave Atlas called it an OEC. My own has been called a transitional and an OEC and an early ideal cut. I think that ForteKitty showed a photo of my ring to Patrick Davis (I think) and he said he thought my stone was an OEC cut in the 302 to 40s! So. No one agrees because there is no standard. With your stone the super super long lower halves are what make me think it was cut later. But really, no one knows.

I like the setting ideas you have. It will be divine.

I think you're right. As for settings, there aren't enough fingers to hold all of the beauty that has been created in the past as well as the beauties of today. I appreciate it all. Plus, there is an element of luck involved with making the vintage settings work with the stone you have in hand or are looking to find. Sometimes it works out. You did it! :appl: :
A perfect flavor of your type of stone in a fabulous vintage setting. Perfection! (And tedious hard work)

I am so excited to see this ring unfold! I would love to have a custom setting from SS. More pics please

First, my above Frankenring comment refers to the precious I'm trying to put together :twirl:

Too many thoughts jumbling as I type  So, soon I will post an update with photos. Like in a few minutes....

Here is my recent Valentine place holder ring. A little golden twig. Sweet and simple. I think it'll be what I wear when bling isn't smart to wear. 14k, size 3.5
Photos of recut coming. They did it and Heather is crazy happy so guess what that makes me :D
Pics in a few...

That twig ring is so darling!! I can't wait to see your finished ring :cheeky:

Yay! I'm told the crown is a tweak higher, it went from 2.31 to 2.24, probably a grade whiter (GIA L to J/K) and now better clarity than VS2. This is getting to be quite the auction deal

Love the twig and love the rock! What can I say - I'm a nature lover I guess!

Thanks Rosebloom! Sometimes I can see just being happy with this, other times I think "love bling". Really, I need none of it if I get to keep my hubby :praise:

I can even see Kozibe now. Cool!

You know, I wanted to ask, but didn't want to be too forward? Given the slight weight loss, I wondered if they touched up the cut along with the girdle.

Since that this is something I've thought about having done with my stones, I'm always fascinated by the process! I'm SO glad you're happy with the result - once you have it back in your hands, post a bazillion pics! I would LOVE to see the before and afters.

Wow, that is a big change! Looks like they did a total recut of the pavilion facets and crown facets to make it look like a more classic OEC? The lower halves are certainly shorter. And the steeper crown implies some cutting of the crown facets. Is the table smaller? Was that your intention or did you give them free reign and this was their option? I would certaintly classify that as more than a girdle faceting jobbie!

Looks like you will have a clear and distinct facet pattern now. I think you will like it a lot. ETA: It looks really nice, I think they did a great job!

The stone needed to have girdle rehab because of the abrasions and tiny nicks and minute chips (except for that one that looked kinda big under the 10x but not in real life). It just looked like a beach glass girdle with some very rough spots on one side. Faceting the girdle needed to be done to keep the stone safe in its new bezel home. I was concerned if faceting was going to make it appear warmer or whiter, should it just get a re-brute? I also asked about improving the cut but...I do want to be a good gatekeeper of history as well. I thought faceted girdles looked nice and (more modern eek) but it was safer, so okay. My modern pear had one and I always thought it was cool. I let Heather know I liked the bigger facet look that it had but I thought that the ring between the outer facets and center inner flower/snowflake facets wasn't as good as it could be from a face down view. I hope you know what I mean: Like three concentric circles. The middle one didn't perform as well. Not that the stone was ugly the way it was, myself and all the gemologists really liked it. It did have a GIA cut grade of good, and it looked like some of GOG's European cuts in his comparison videos so I knew I had a distinct type. In the end, I said facet it (girdle), clean it up, polish it. In order to do that, some of the kite and bezel facets would need to be redone. Made sense, sounded fine. I thought hey, maybe the cut will improve even more? I haven't seen it yet but from pictures I think it looks so much better! I asked them to just document everything since I'm too impatient to send it to GIA again  I'm sure it is more round as well though bezels work miracles in that department.

I know they handled everything above the girdle. Anything below the girdle, ahem, was not touched.
I'll be here all week :naughty:

No, if he altered the pavilion that was not mentioned. But, I pretty much did give carte blanche with: cutting as much as you need based on what you're telling me to fix what needs to be repaired, and you know I like the chunky facet look, so...maybe he did it on his own. Maybe it just didn't look right when he fixed the top or maybe he didn't do it at all. I'll ask, but that is not what they mentioned they fixed. Just happy it looks so nice. 8)

Well purely for interest sake I would have loved to see a sarin scan before and after. But its possible the pavilion was not changes and the tewaking of the crown to create a more complimentary angle with the existing PA changes the crispness of the patterning. I don't recall and really good macro shots before either so I am just basing it on my memory. But I think it looks really good now. I think you will be blown away.

Me too, thanks Dreamer. I could not get great shots. I am going to get a good lighted loupe and try it with that when it shows up. Maybe I'm underestimating what an overall new polish can do as well. Like a sparkling new window cleaning.

Someone else commented that a simple polish made a huge difference to their old cut.

Does your camera have a macro function? Much easier than using a loupe.

I just bought a little Elph 320 and have the big Minolta SLR
and the iPhone. What do you recommend?

I don't know nothin' about nothin' when it comes to cameras. I have a little Sony Cybershot and I love it. Take the pictures without flash in a setting with natural light, hold the camera super steady and get really close. Then crop the images after so only the diamond is in the frame. That is what I do! But I tried another camera once and it was imposible to take any macro shots so... I am no help.

can't wait to see the final product!

:Up_to_something: don't be mad, but I'm going to send it back to GIA for an updated report. It'll be good for insurance and frankly diamond geeks want to know :read: :geek: :geek: :ugeek:

Oh very good plan.

Old stats, new stats:

2.31 to 2.24ct
L to K
VS2 to VS1
Cut Grade- Good to Very Good
Measurements- 8.51 x 8.67 to 8.46 x 8.60
Polish- Good to Very Good
Symmetry- Fair to Good

That's all I 've got so far.
Pretty nice improvement. Still working on setting ideas/details...

Wow, those are very positive changes!!! I think their rehab was very worthwhile!

I totally missed this thread! Bravo for all the positive changes post recut! :appl:

Can't wait to see!
