Hi all and happy Friday!
To give a little (or a lot) background I was on the hunt for an old mine cut diamond for an engagement ring for myself. My budget was under $6,000. I buckled down, did my research, spent a lot of time here reading through old posts. I considered seriously 4 different stones before finding the one. I most seriously considered: a 1.2ct VS2 O/P, a 1.5ct L VS1, a 1.66ct L VS1, and lastly 2.03ct K I2 in that order all from knowledgeable and reputable dealers. All of these previous diamonds were great in their own way. Ultimately I took a risk and bid on a diamond set in a platinum setting from an established family owned auction house in the Northeast. I was sent a couple pictures of the stone but did not see it in person beforehand and bid online. The stone was also completely uncerted but evaluated by the auction house. It was nerve wracking but I trusted the Jewelry Specialist and just had a a good feeling about it. It was also large enough that I would be happy to recut it if necessary and it seemed clean enough for me.

Anyway, got the ring posted a few pictures here when I was considering the setting type, got a few quotes, and have decided on a designer to work with. In advance of having the stone set I had it taken out of its platinum setting, and sent to GIA.

I am so happy with the results! It's .2ct larger than the auction house estimated and a teensy bit bigger in dimensions.
The clarity grade was correctly estimated at VS1 (which was a shock). I thought for sure it would be lower than that. The person who unset it said I could expect to get SI2 in the best case scenario. Heard about the same from an appraiser. The official clarity ultimately doesn't matter to me since it looked clean to me. The color was estimated to M/N and was graded as O/P which is fine with me since it will be set in gold in the end. Anyway here is the report. The basics are 2.59ct, OP, VS1. Even though it's not 100% perfect or may not be up to everyone's standards I'm just glad I got all that and under budget. Now for pics, let me know your thoughts! I'm not sure how to evaluate the depth/table/girdle so any thoughts on that are appreciated.

Thank you to all for the wisdom on this site!

Before being unset, in its original platinum setting which I think made it look cooler toned but also somewhat greenish in some lights.

At the GIA office after it was freshly cleaned. I was nervous to hand it over. Pictured E/W in the picture on the left and N/S in the picture on the right.

Closeup showing the slightly disorganized facet pattern but love it anyway!

Your stone is AWESOME!!! It's so charming and I love the facet pattern. I also adore it's pillowy outline. You did great, what a gorgeous stone!!

Will you put it in the original 8 prong setting? I think it's perfect :rolleyes2:.

Your diamond is gorgeous especially considering the price paid! You did excellent job with all your research and risk taken! Enjoy your reword!

 Could you trust such an "appraiser"?!? :roll

Fabulous find!

Congrats, well done! Lovely stone, can't wait to see it in its new setting!

Lovely! Enjoy your stone.

Gorgeous stone!

Beautiful stone. What an inspiration you are to others! Nice work. Looking forward to seeing it set and on your hand!

Very charming stone with lots of personality! Congrats!

Well done on a beautiful diamond!!! I would totally wear that! You did a great job!

Oh good work - you got a real beauty there! Great shape, love the (slightly wonky but charmingly so) faceting and it’s an excellent size! No wonder you’re chuffed, that hard work paid off and it’ll give you an extra frisson of satisfaction whenever you look at it!
How will you set it? The original 8 prong setting is pretty.

Really really pretty!!

The auction house I love will have another sale this spring and I can’t wait for it. :) What an awesome diamond you have! It’s beautiful on your hand.

I thought GIA didn't do split grades, i.e. it would either be an O or a P. Was your report from the GIA lab or just someone who did their training at a GIA facility and works for a jeweller, but is not certified by GIA?

That’s lovely. Is it possible to get the name of this trustworthy auction house?

They split on higher letters.

God I love that stone. What a fantastic outcome. How are you going to set it?

Thank you! :) :)

I think in a 6-8 prong setting with either small french cut side stones or small shoulders with one .10 OMC stone on each side. Not decided yet!

I would have been totally happy to just keep the sweet 8 prong setting had it been in gold instead of platinum. I'll still probably do a 6-8 prong setting. And yes love the pillowy outline too! Seems like some OMC's can be rounder but I was also looking at antique cushions and I think I landed in the middle with this stone.

Very pretty stone, congrats!

Thank you! I enjoyed "the hunt" so much (much to the chagrin of the dealers probably!). I was skeptical when the first person said it could be an SI2 or lower (maybe the stone was dirty) but extra surprised to hear it again especially after the cert came in. Who knows maybe I just got really lucky with GIA.

Congrats, well done! Lovely stone, can't wait to see it in its new setting!

Thank you, your "divine miss m" is definitely an inspiration. I love the prong shape and the faceting of your OEC. Hoping one day I can justify getting an OEC too ;)

ha, thank you! Definitely got wayyyy into it and was happy to find kindred spirits here.

Very charming stone with lots of personality! Congrats!

Its funny how despite all the metrics for measuring stones it all adds up to each one being unique in its own way. Even though it was at times frustrating (and expensive) considering and bringing home different stones I was happy to spend time with them all and get to know them. Made me especially certain about this stone once I saw it.

Congratulations! That is one GORGEOUS stone!!!

Thank you Maisie! Sending good thoughts and warm feelings your way for the swift and full recovery of your sweet newborn grandson.

Thanks foxinsox! I was convinced when they unset it there was going to be some major chip or issue with the outline under one of the 8 prongs. But thankfully all was well. As for the size as you can tell from all the stones I was considering I was starting to get DSS but I'm really happy with the size. Never worn large stones before so it will be something to get used to. I love the 8 prong setting too and would have kept it if it was gold. I'll probably still do a 6-8 prong look. Seems to match the stone well.

Thank you! It was my first time buying something that expensive (or even over a couple hundred dollars) in any kind of auction and online so I was really out on a limb. But its so fun! And I find the items in auctions are usually pretty interesting depending on who the specialist is and where the jewelry is coming from.
