Sending diamond to jeweler to reset - Safety concerns?!

I have no idea anything about this... but I'm having David Klass reset my diamond and make my setting. I'm ready to send the diamond to him, however, we're a bit unsettled about sending something worth so much to this random person across the country. All I have from David are emails and a CAD drawing of the setting. Even if there was 'something' (ie paperwork), I'm not sure what 'something' to ask from him. An invoice? Purchase order? Some sort of promise that he won't accept my diamond and run off?
Don't get me wrong, I don't have any reason to doubt him, he sounds amazing and has been really lovely and helpful. But I just hesitated when I was about to ship the diamond off this afternoon. Really someone could just set themselves up as a jeweler and accept diamonds from people and then disappear, right? Am I being totally paranoid?!

Well, David Klass is hardly a "random person," but a skilled jeweler whom many on this forum have worked with for some years. Look up some of the previous posts on his shop's work to boost your confidence.

I think what you're looking for is a contract? IE "I agree to complete X, Y and Z work for the sum of $dollars"

I too would feel uneasy at sending something off, even if it is one of the three top rated jewellers on this forum, without an explicit agreement as to what each party is responsible for. It's good expectation management.

Why not call and ask for a contract or invoice to be set up? What happens if the stone gets lots in postage? What happens if the setting costs change because the diamond doesn't fit as expected? What happens if <insert your concern here>. There are a few threads on PS where people have started custom projects and a small miscommunication turns into an insurmountable issue because one (or both!) sides have different expectations. And while I am sure DK is amazing, he also isn't a mind reader, and neither is the OP.

I just sent three pieces off to a jeweler I don't know; my cousin thinks I am nuts. I did have a "I hope this works out" moment. I don't even have a CAD yet-- he knows what I am looking for and he gave me a price for the design I like the most. The other two he is setting/resetting. He probably needs to see my diamond first to be sure what I like will look good.

What I am looking for is pretty easy to,do, so I think we are good.

David Klass is very well known and the only downside is that he is very busy, so I don't know what timeframe he quoted you for completion.
