I am working with a local jeweler trying to find the perfect diamond, and after doing some research and having them try and find the perfect diamond they think they may have it, but I can't make it out there for a couple of days and was told by some of my friends to check out this place, so I was hoping you guys could tell me if this is a good buy!

The ring is GIA certified and:

1.01 carats
SI2.H color, Excellent Cut Symmetry and polish, No Fluorescence
Measures 6.42x6.47x3.99
Depth 61.9
Table 57

The price they quoted me was $6900 for the diamond and it seems a little steep, I am trading in another ring for this one and they are offering me $905 for my old ring and I am wondering if they upped the price on the new diamond.

Does this sound like a decent price? Thanks!

It seems expensive. Look at comps on James Allen.

Well the closest I could find on JA was below and it has a pretty bad inclusion on it and was a couple grand below.. I know SI2 range from being able to see it with the naked eye and can't.

Edit: Also i know buying in person will be more expensive than buying online, any idea what the normal mark-up is when you buy in person instead of online?

I'm just saying it's expensive because you can get a stone that is 2 higher clarity grades for less: http://www.jamesallen.com/#!/loose-diamonds/round-cut/1.02-carat-h-color-vs2-clarity-excellent-cut-sku-204883

Markup varies but I once compared a stone from Shane Co to a JA stone and the price was about 25% more at Shane, without factoring in sales tax.

Here is a close comp (this one has better clarity, is a tiny bit bigger, has AGS cert). I don't think your jeweler's price is out of line although shopping on-line you could find a nicer stone for a slightly better price. It depends, of course, on the stone you have found and how perfect it is for you. The information you have provided isn't enough to really evaluate the stone. (GIA number?) But you have seen it in person and there are benefits to buying locally.

I wonder if you could get more for you old ring by selling it yourself on DiamondBistro?

For $100 more I'd look at this one.

I go Saturday to actually look at the stone in person, and I buy alot of things online, but I think something like this I would rather buy locally for personal reasons. I am working on getting the GIA number for this one.

The ring I am trading in is (alot better color and clarity than this diamond which is why I was surprised at the price):

GIA certified 14750524 with the dossier and

Shape and Cutting Style: Round Brilliant
Measurements: 4.77 -4.79 x 2.94mm

Carat weight: 0.41Carat
Color Grade: G
Clarity Grade: VS2
Cut Grade: Excellent

Clarity Characteristics: Crystal, Cloud, Feather

Finish:
Polish: Excellent
Symmetry: Excellent
Fluorescence: None

I had never heard of diamond bistro, I will check it out

I got the GIA # for the stone 6127471243

numbers are good. that said, if you could get something similar for $6000 and keep your old ring, would that make you happier

It would make my wallet happier. But in the end I do plan on selling the old ring, I'm not interested in keeping it.

It is cheaper buying online but I understand your desire to buy local. See if you can use the online comps from JA (higher clarity and/or color for a lower price) to see if you can talk the price of the stone down a little.

What setting is your current stone in? Is it fancy? You may be able to sell stone + setting for more than $900 yourself, but if it's just a basic setting, $900 seems like a fair trade-in for stone + setting. A 0.40 G color GIA XXX stone sells for about $1K on James Allen. I think it's realistic for private sellers to get about 70% of the retail price for a new ring.

I will try and use the online comps, along with my haggling skills to try and get them to drop the whole price.. And the ring I have is pretty much a plain solitaire, it is almost this identical ring: http://www.helzberg.com/product/1-2ct+diamond+engagement+ring+ags+graded+1761835.do?sortby=ourPicks

Good luck! At the very least, see if you can avoid paying sales tax as you won't need to pay sales tax if you buy online (assuming that you're not located in the state where the online vendor is). I usually try to make that argument if I'm negotiating.

This is a great idea, thank you!

You only don't need to pay sales tax online if you decide not to report it and nobody catches you. :wink2:

Argue as you wish but bear in mind that this is illegal in most states. The obligation for the merchant to collect tax is not the same as your obligation to pay it.

Good point. You should pay it. However, the mechanisms the government has in place to collect sales tax on online purchases are pretty weak right now.
