Hello all.

I'm in a bit of a pickle. Here's some background info. I have previously utilize the pricescope community on finding an engagement ring and got an excellent stone from James Allen. Followed by having it set at the san francisco diamond exchange, which is where I'm located.
Due to unforeseen circumstances, my engagement did not end in marriage. So after 2 years and letting the dust settle in my life, I'm trying this ring buying process again.

I have my previously bought ring and stone in pocession currently. I'm wondering if anyone knows where in the sf bay area I can attempt to sell the stone and ring to and not get totally screwed. I attempted to contact James Allen and their policy on returning stones or upgrading is 2x the purchase price and that's just not an option for me. any advice on what I should do? I don't mind losing 10-15% of my GIA certified stone but anything more is just not going to work. Is my only option just to take the stone and reset it on a different ring? Call me superstitious but that's bad juju And a bit unfair to my future fiancé.

Any advice and help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks guys

Unless you got a spectacular deal originally from James Allen you will be lucky to net 50% of what you paid. More likely 40%. Not worth the time, trouble, and indignity.

Reset into an upgraded primo setting and keep quiet about it. If you feel strongly about bad juju then reset the diamond as a pendant and buy a new ring for the fiance.

I think selling your stone on the 2nd hand market and expecting to get 85-90% of what you paid is not realistic. You can try selling it on diamond bistro/loupe troupe and listing it on this site under preloved, or perhaps consignment is another option. Selling it to another jeweller will give you even less, because they will have to mark up the stone to get a profit. Good luck.

Like others have stated you're going to eat quite a bit of loss. Selling to a jeweler and you'd probably be lucky to get 50%. Depending on the quality of the diamond you might only lose $20-30%. Resetting is the best option but if you or your fiance believe in the "bad juju" then just sell it and take the loss and have peace of mind.

If you post the specs and some pics people here can give you an estimate on what it might fetch and that could help on your decision of what to do with the ring.

Wow...I didn't know it would be so harsh...I can't remember the specs of the stone but it's basically 1.52ct round, at $10k....losing 50% is quite brutal to me...I might have to just reset. Any clues if Tiffany does settings stones? I know it's overpriced and for the name but I know my gf would love it
