After reading on this board, I''m getting a little obsessive....
I have been staring at my engagement ring and I can now see the inclusion! It is an SI1 and I can see a small white line from the side, just under the table. It doesn''t seem to impact the sparkle (the stone rates an "excellent" on the HCA and looks gorgeous!), but should I be able to see that without magnification?? (the stone is 2.5 carats)

In larger stones (yours being 2.5 would qualify as larger!), it may be possible to see an SI1 inclusion.

Do you mean you can see it if you hold your diamond THISCLOSE to your face, or at normal viewing distance? Does it bother you to see it?

Is the line just under the girdle edge or is it closer to the bottom point (culet) of the stone? A lot of times people mistake the point where the pavilion main facets and the lower girdle facets intersect as an inclusion or a fracture (it appears as a white line) when it really is just an optical illusion. Can you post a picture of what you're seeing? You might also just take it by a local jewelery store for a professional opinion.

Thanks for your insight.
The inclusion is only noticeable when viewed from the side and the stone is RIGHT up in my face. But I'm sure it's there, as it matches the red mark on my cert. It doesn't really bother me, the stone still looks gorgeous and sparkles like crazy, but I was surprised that I could see it.
I can trade up with my jeweler. Although since it is my engagement ring, I'm somewhat reluctant to do so. Any thoughts? Is seeing something like this is a major flaw in an SI1?

If it doesn't inherently bother you, think of it as a simple way to identify your own stone if you have ot leave it with a jeweler for work or whatever. Inclusions are a natural part of diamonds, and yours sounds somewhat typical for an SI1. They either bug you or they don't.
