I have noticed LOTS of small nicks and scratches in my platinum ring when viewed under a loupe - is this normal? I don''t feel like I am very hard on the ring, but I don''t know, now?

Yes it''s perfectly normal and your jeweler can polish them out for you. Nothing you can do to prevent it. except for being careful with your ring. I am very careful with mine and I too have scratches . I take mine off once I''m home, but I''m not normal, haha.

yup! get used to it! you're probably not hard on it. plat does scratch and nick and will become dull. But so does white gold and it become a bit yellow over time.

I''ve had more nicks, scratches, etc on my platinum ring than any of my white or yellow gold rings.

No platinum for me next time around.

Scratches and nicks are normal. You have a couple of choices. Have it polished periodically, which will return it to it''s original state temporarily. I think you actually lose a small amount of metal each time they do this, so it would depend on the bulk of the ring on wether it makes sense. Or, learn to live with and love the patina it will develop over time. After a while, the nicks and scratches will blend rather than stand out on their own.

I tend to do both. I have it polished, and it looks awesome for a while. Then I let it start to build up the patina look until I get motivated to have it polished again.

It''s perfectly normal, your ring is developing a patina. If you don''t like it you can have it polished out by your jeweler a couple times a year. I think it''s interesting that on antique platinum jewelry, if you polish out the patina, it decreases its value.

F&I...I totally feel the same way! Everyone looks at me like I''m crazy going white gold. BUT, I have noticed that my wedding band (which I reset from plat to white gold when I added a stone) is turning a teensy bit yellow. Not enough to bother me...but definitely not dull like my plat got

thank you very much for your responses! That makes me feel better ;-)

I wonder if they aren''t mixing the white gold with some dopey alloy these days. The family ring hubby gave me is white gold. To this day, it''s just as white as the plat. I wore that ring for 10 years (and it had many miles on it before me!). I''ve had my plat setting for about 3 years and it looks like it''s been through the war compared with the older ring (1930''s).

According to my jeweler and the platinum guild site you don''t lose metal with polishing, it just moves it back to fill in the gap. A "Scratch" is merely a dent of displaced metal. Not to say that if you knock the hell out of it or scrape it on another harder metal you won''t remove metal from the band.
