Gentlemen, (and ladies?),

God I''ve got better things to do, and yet I''m sitting in front of this screen on a day off, and seem to find it appropriate to wonder about some things here.

What I''m wondering is the extent that a "regular guy" consumer can "do it himself...," the extent, generally, you can DIY?

Jimmy says:

I am going to the trouble or buying a flawless stone with perfectly clarity so I want to make sure I get it right.
He is spending for D and IF, if I understand him right, and John, you''re suggesting that a Pricescoper can help him with cut.

Can we?

John, if we want to give advice, and are less concerned about education generally, or "diamond public policy," where you say:

In the meantime, the PS population will just have to continue using the standards that have evolved thus far to help others. So Jimmy, don''t worry about the blitzkrieg here. If you can get crown and pavilion angles Pricescopers can help you. A 3d model would be beyond fab.
In this case, at least, Jimmy is not the PS population. And...if anyone is seriously interested in optimizing their selection, I am wondering about the extent to which their vendor options will be limited.

As I see it...there''s two issues:

a) having metrics, and
b) using them

with clarity...you have metrics that take you from Flawless to I3. With all deference to Jimmy, I think advice here suggests that beyond VS, you don''t experience the value of the differential in the metrics. It may be reasonable to pay for IF clarity, but not for seeing it, or so the logic goes here, right?

So, if Jimmy is willing to go D, IF, I think he needs to know more about minor angles, as well, doesn''t he? If he wants to put together an optimized diamond for his gal?

It''s one thing to know you''d like to get an "ideally cut diamond...," but as we know here, it may be another thing to determine if you have the information to confirm it.

What I read here is that a decision to have the best should be tied to an understanding that not only ones major facets, but also their minor''s are optimized...however you guys work that out.

It makes me wonder a bit if my suggestions to readers here goes the necessary distance. It''s not that I haven''t asked the questions before?

over!

I really don''t have a new enough idea to suggest a new post, just what feels like a significant itch to scratch.

Perry frequently offers the advice that, for reasonable shopping when you are trying to optimize, unless you spend a long time trying to figure it out yourself, you really do have to constrain your options to a small group of vendors and/or branded options.

I guess, if you are willing to concede the necessity of paying the most for getting the best...the assistance I''m seeking concerns....some way of understanding....visualizing...if you will....the extent to which you are de-optimizing, when you are not getting that premium, instead.

I suppose WF offers an expert selection as one direct method to represent this distinction. Certainly, that''s putting your money where your mouth is.

Perhaps the thing is...whereas both Jonathan and John represented here will provide options at the pinnacle of premium, and also, somewhat down from there...inasmuch as a discerning consumer could be willing to forgo some aspects of perfection over others...rather than just turning over ones wallet to these guys and saying...I only want to pay for beauty I can see...maybe it could make sense to be able to couple that request with a check list I can have in my hand to also confirm that I am getting what I think I''m asking for. And also, if I feel I need to pinch costs a little here and there, to be able to do this in an informed way.

But beyond seeking that advice, being able to DIY?....

As the sophistication of the issues in play are discussed here, I become less clear that a spin of the HCA and an idealscope picture are all the tools one needs.

I suppose I''m also saying here than Jonathan makes a convincing case. Is a counterpoint appropriate?

Regards,
