Safest mm shank for a 1.91ct OEC?

Hi all! I got a phone call from my jeweler that my ring is done. It is a custom platinum basket solitaire, 2.2mm shank. My bf and I are going on Thursday to take a look at it and give our final ok before taking it home.

Here's the thing: I have the option of asking the SA to shave down the shank if that is my preference. I personally love a thinner shank and band. My previous ering was a 2ct modern cushion with a 1.8mm shank. I loved it, never took it off (even with showering, doing dishes, taking care of the dog, etc) and had no problems with it. However, when we were ordering the setting, my SA kept pushing me to keep the shank at least 2.0mm because it would be unsafe if I went thinner. She also said that over time, the shank would get thinner with wear, so she got me extremely paranoid we settled on 2.2mm. I'm still worried that I'm going to think feel like it's too wide, but I have been seeing lots of larger OECs being set in rings with thinner shanks and nobody seems have problems regarding the integrity of the ring or safety of the stone.

Before I make the final decision about whether to go thinner, I would like to know if you all think I should keep it at 2.2mm or if it would be ok to bring it down to 1.8mm. Thanks!

I think 2mm is a nice compromise--a bit sturdier than 1.8, but still thinner than 2.2. With a thin platinum shank, you also can risk bending or having it go out of round. If you strongly prefer the 1.8, then just get that, but you may have to baby it a bit more. But if you're comfortable with it, then go with what you love! By the way, platinum supposedly doesn't lose metal like gold does, so I'm not sure the SA is correct when she says it will get thinner over the years. A gold band, yes, but platinum? I've never heard that.

I agree with Laila - a 2 mm would be a nice compromise in size. I understand the visual appeal of a thinner shank but the troubles it could pose just wouldn't be worth it in the end.

Tell us about the stone - is it new or is this a reset?

2.2mm is still thin! I think you need to see it before asking for a change. Is it platinum or gold? Because if it is gold, it definitely will thin over time and I'd probably leave it at 2.2mm.

I would keep it at 2.2. I think that's a perfectly fine and still really small width. I honestly don't think you'll really notice much of a difference.

Thanks for the input so far. I'm still very very divided, and I do know I need to see it first. But, I think they will want a final decision on what to do, and my boyfriend is eager to take it home and not sit on it forever.

The stone is a 1.91ct L VS1 OEC - it is new, and it faces up about 8x8. This will be the forever setting I'm hoping for a long long long time. What I like about a plain simple solitaire is that it will be easy to match any sort of wedding band with it, and we are planning on at least trying to get semi-matching wedding rings.

It is platinum, so it sounds like it won't thin like gold will. I thought I would gather some thoughts from the experts before making a final decision, but yes, I will definitely consider keeping it at 2.2mm if I feel like it doesn't look too thick on my finger.

Most settings can be straightened again.

I have a 1.7 ct with a 1.5 mm pave (almost all the way) band. No issues at all and not too thin for me.

Hmm, I think i might go for the 1.8mm but I'll ask the SA to show me settings that are 1.8mm and 2.0mm and decide from there. A friend of mine also pointed out that if I get it insured, I would be covered if anything were to happen to the setting.

Yes, but you wouldn't want to make a claim on a setting and risk higher premiums from there on out. I insure jewelry because of the value of the diamonds and wouldn't make a claim because of a ring shank problem. What platinum alloy is it? That will affect the durability.

This is very true as well! I'm not sure what platinum alloy it is... would you mind listing the ones that are less prone to bending so when I ask my SA I'll know whether to be more generous with the width?
