rubyshoes - question about the colour of your 6P Argyle Pink

hi rubyshoes!

Your new ring is so gorgeous, a pear in pink, I couldn't think of anything better :lickout:

I wonder if you could help me with a question that I have about the colour of your beautiful Pink Argyle stone?

I noticed in one of your threads that it was a 6P? I am looking for some melee for a ring I am having made and I wanted your thoughts on the colour. Do you feel that it is 'strong' enough? I don't want the fancy/ intense type pinks but I don't want it to be so pale that you can't see it, ESP in such a small stone. I am after the paler / blush type 'baby' pinks these stones come in. I saw some melee IRL last week but now I am wondering if it's the right choice, ESP considering the size (one or 2 points each) that I'll be using.

Any thoughts or insights you can give me on the colours will be much appreciated! :wavey:

Re: rubyshoes - question about the colour of your 6P Argyle

Hi! I am happy you like my stone so much :) I haven't seen any pink diamonds in real life other than my own pink and I can say that the color is definitely not too light. 6P according to the Argyle scale is 'light' but personally I find the color to be distinctly pink. Since the halo around the pink diamond is bright white and the ring itself is platinum, the contrast really brings out the 'pinkness'. But even when she was unset, she was definitely a pink stone.

http://www.argylepinkdiamonds.com.au/en/pink_diamond_colour_quality.asp Looking at this chart, although mine is technically a 6P I'd say mine looks between a 6 and a 5 to me.

My camera captures a more peachy cast indoors with indoor lighting but outdoors it is definitely a pink shade. I wouldn't want a very intense pink diamond (apart from definitely not being able to afford one) because I feel pink sapphires do a much better job of presenting a 'super bright or hot' color. I hear you on not wanting a pink diamond so pale you can't tell it is 'pink' but at least with my diamond it is a nice pink shade, kinda like ballerina slippers. Here's a photo when she was unset.

I'd say, buy from a jeweler who will sell you a clearly pink stone (I highly recommend Leibish and Diamonds By Lauren), make sure you have a great return policy in case it just isn't pink enough and then set your pink diamond in rose gold, and put a bright white melee in bright white gold or plat around your pink :appl:

Let me know if this helps? Good luck with your project!!!

Re: rubyshoes - question about the colour of your 6P Argyle

Thanks rubyshoes!! Your description of the colours has helped me a lot and it sounds as though it's exactly what i am after. I was originally going to go for 7P but i think i should probably bump it up to the 6P so it's not too pale.

I live in Western Australia so I will be sourcing the stones locally and I will be able to view them before I purchase, so that will help too.

Thanks again rubyshoes! :wavey:

Re: rubyshoes - question about the colour of your 6P Argyle

Hi, wondering if I can just chip in my humble opinion... I think 6P is a great colour, and certainly certainly pink enough to BE pink. anything darker than 6P (5P onwards) tends to wind up as intense or vivid (based on the pinks I've been looking at on Leibish) when GIA grades them.

In fact I've seen quite a few scoring 6P or 6PR or 6PP getting intense grades too from GIA. I'm not sure if I am getting colour intensity and colour wrong (Kenny or someone more erudite please help).

Of course TristanC! I appreciate all opinions on the colours of Pink diamonds. :))

yep, my argyle is 6PP and it's a FIpP...

Re: rubyshoes - question about the colour of your 6P Argyle

I can't help much but will say you are very lucky to be able to see them in real life.
I'd say just trust your eyes for the color intensity that you like and will work for your project.
Melee will not be lab-graded anyway so having a grade in your mind, like 6P or whatever, will not matter.
Since there will be no lab report be sure to buy from a trusted vendor, perhaps ask them to put that into writing, to ensure the color is on natural origin if that is important to you.

Be sure to post pics. :appl:

Re: rubyshoes - question about the colour of your 6P Argyle

Thank you ace and Kenny!

I will go with what my eyes tell me looks good as far as the colour goes.

I am being careful with my choice of vendor too. In stones this size it is literally double the cost to have a certificate of origin with them, and while I want to make sure they are argyle stones, I don't think I'm willing to pay twice the price for the bit of paper that goes with it.

I think that I will end up going with this man, provided he can source what I want. He was the Principal cutter for Rio Tinto for 25 years so I feel confident that he would provide the real deal.

I looked into a few jewelers (found through the Pink Argyle website) who are local but many are not keen to sell them loose, as they want to set them as well. One Jeweler said it would be $220 for 2 points of 7P each but then she quickly back peddled when I said I wanted them there and then. She said she wanted to get some in for me that were a matched pair. She phoned back with the new price.... $325 for 1 pointers! :?

:angryfire: So he's the guy who keeps cutting these G/G or G/VG Pink stones these past 25 years... the lousy maggot should learn how to cut and polish properly and get an Ex/Ex rating on at least a FEW of the stones that pass his way.

Re: rubyshoes - question about the colour of your 6P Argyle

LOL Tristan I am innocent! :halo: Wouldn't it be more important for them to cut the stones to retain the weight so they are more valuable, because the value is in the size and the colour, cut would be less important? IDK, that would be my thoughts though!

So I had an interesting development in my Pinkie search yesterday! I went to one of the main Perth jewelers whom I knew worked with a lot of Pinks. They are the kind of jeweler that PSers would warn you to stay away from, very expensive, snotty customer service. Anyway I thought I would take a look and I actually came out pleasantly surprised!

I was quoted these prices...

2 x 0.01ct 5P $540
2 x 0.02ct 5P $1086

2 x 0.01ct 6P $295
2 x 0.02ct 6P $585

BUT the great thing is that my husband works for BHP and they have an employee diamond buying program through the Ecati mine in Canada. This jeweler stocks the Ecati diamonds and is an affiliate of the program so if I drag my husband up with his work ID I can get the argyle Pinks at a discounted price! I don't know what the discount is as she can't tell me without seeing my husbands work ID but it's going to be better than nothing!

Thanks Kenny!

It's good to have different data points to compare to, I will check them out.
