hi. i am a new here and i was wondering if you could help me with this ruby ring. i understand that this is not a top quality ruby but is there any value for this ruby?
its approximately 50 carats. originated from madagascar. i am not really knowledgeable about rubies and as far as i can tell, it''s cut is good. symmetrical and reflects the light smoothly over the surface. there are some scratches on the top surface polish from wear i think..but as far as the luster and color is concerned, i am at loss...
it has many inclusions....so i guess this ruby is considered semi transparent?? the color seems to be dark puplish red although under bright light, it seems more lighter..
Thank you so much for your help!!!!!
ive attached a pic...

Has the stone ever been tested in a lab to confirm that it''s even a natural stone and/or to see if it has been treated? There are a lot of factors that would influence the price. For instance a fracture filled (a type of treatment) ruby similar to your in appearance can cost around 20$/ct, but if the stone is untreated that would make it more valuable. And eventhough this one is not exactly what''s considered a quality specimen, the size alone would make it quite valuable. This doesen''t look like some of those opaque, pale, cabocnon cut "rubies" of 10 cts sold on tv shopping channels for 10$/ct.

I know it''s not much of an answer, but it''s probably as good as you''ll get without taking it to a gemologist or a laboratory to be tested and appraised.

It does not matter to the stone if I or you say its good or bad.
From my personal experience,I will request you personally to get a certificate and estimate its value from any internationally recognised gemological institution(I have gone for couple of stones at International Gemological Institute,IGI).

thank you for your help~~
From what i know of the stone, its natural mined and untreated in anyway. but I just wanted to see if it''s even worth spending $100 to get it certified/tested from the gem lab.
Thank you!!

It''s worth maybe $40 wholesale and $100-150 retail(guesstimation).."reflects the light smoothly over the surface" but not through the stone which makes it translucent..rubies that are translucent are really not worth that much..they are a dime a dozen..here are some rubies that I have that are close to yours in quality/clarity..yours is cut very well where as mine are not but to give you a price idea..I paid $20 from pakistan for these unheated/untreated natural stones(including 10 smaller 2-3ct. ones not included in pic) from afghanistan..largest 28ct. total weight 101ct.

It''s not really gem grade, so I wouldn''t bother testing it and getting it appraised.

I think this one will be considered opaque and as such is probably not worth the lab testing or certification. As mentioned, the light should not go across the surface but through the stone.

Colored stones are priced according to color, with transparency also being a very strong requirement in value. I definitely agree it''s not worth taking to the lab as it is not gem quality and would not be worth much financially at all in the gem market. However, that doesn''t mean it isn''t beautiful to you and valuable for you to wear and enjoy.

Where did you purchase it?

Ditto to what everyone else said; you can buy a lot of larger fissure filled rubies from JTV easily.

On those photos it didn''t seem THAT cheap to me...you live and learn I guess.

We would suggest you to contact your vendor and ask him if it is treated or not.
