I know everyone on Pricescope is allergic to Blue Nile, but forgetting about loose diamonds and drop shipping and photos for a minute, they have a really enormous collection of jewellery. The fun part is that they introduce a bunch of new jewellery most days. Much of it is very high quality, and then there are lower-priced ranges using I SI2 or I1 melee for those who don't want to spend as much. They also have spectacular pieces well into the six figures, which are much fun to gawp at. They copied a stunning ruby and diamond necklace that Kate once wore. Well, it's not a direct copy of course, but very similar. BN has also produced other pieces that are similar to her jewellery. They also make quite a few pieces that are very similar to certain pieces from Tiffany, Cartier and other designers, and it's always so much fun to look on their website!

Here's the ruby necklace very much like Kate's:

I love this 22-carat E VS2 necklace

I'm also rather partial to this 13 carat platinum ring:

Here's a necklace reminiscent of the Cartier Trinity range for much less money:

When I want to buy good quality jewellery online, and to have a really wide range of choice and if I'm not in the mood to pay for the brand name, I find that the only place online to look outside the high-end of Cartier and Tiffany is Blue Nile. I look at Ross Simons and it's like a jumble sale. I can't think of any other online jewellers who have the range of jewellery than BN does, not counting loose diamonds and diamond rings.

Enjoy the links!

I think the quality of their coloured stones are subpar. The sapphires are dark and gray with no mention of treatment. The rubies are too dark and brownish with no mention of treatment either. Design-wise, I cannot fault them though.

I don't know much about coloured stones. Here's a link above, though.

On the website their gemstones look nice and brightly coloured. I have some sapphire and pearl BN earrings, and the colour of the sapphires is very nice, although they are small and like I said, I'm not a coloured stone expert.

Just found the link to their enhancements page - scroll down for the table. The sapphires are heat-treated and/or infused, but Tiffany's sapphires are heat treated, infused, and/or diffused, which I thought was a big no-no. They're all at it!

Chrono - here's the link to my little sapphire and pearl earrings from BN. As someone who knows about coloured stones, what do you think? All I know about sapphires is whether I like their shade of blue or not! I don't know which hue is most desirable. These cost just over $400. Good deal, bad deal?

You've got it. This is why I never recommend BN nor Tiffany for coloured stones. Not only that, the BN website shows a generic photo, not a picture of the actual piece you will receive. As for your earrings, I know little to nothing about pearls so I will not comment on those but only on the sapphires. They appear to be of commercial quality. Most likely heated, possibly diffused (who knows?) but given the price you paid, I wouldn't sweat it as I think it is a fair price from what I can tell when you break it down to their individual components (metal, labour, pearls, sapphires, etc).

Thanks, Chrono.

I've got a set of sapphires-by-the-yard from Whiteflash, and it's so great to know that only heat treatment was used.

This morning BN has another nice copy of a diamond Tiffany piece - this time from the Jazz collection. They are bringing out so much jewellery at the moment - new pieces every few hours - and it's really fun to look at it.

I love the classic design of the first sapphire and diamond earrings you posted. But the sapphires look dark and the diamonds are SI2. But I think looking there for ideas is great, and for inexpensive pieces like gold hoops, etc, I would consider buying there. I'd have those earrings custom made with better diamonds and sapphires, though.

My preference is to buy real Tiffany items second hand as opposed to buying copies (with the exception of my ering setting which they don't sell without a diamond!).

Agree that the sapphires look dark, DS. I love their design but I wouldn't pay that price for them either. Si2 in melee doesn't bother me - I'm one of those who likes lower clarity because I don't like to pay for what I can't see. As we often talk about on PS though, everyone's "mind-clean" is different!

By the way, Blue Nile will often customise. It does depend on their vendor, but sometimes they can re-make a piece with your desired specs. They've done it for me before, and it worked out well.

I also agree with you about buying Tiffany items second-hand. Often you can't find what you want though, if it's a less popular piece. And MA's tax-free weekend is coming up..... :naughty:

I also worry about buying expensive items on eBay, because how do you know that they will definitely send the item in the picture?
