hey everyone! I have posted a few times, but mostly just read to gather information and try to understand this whole diamond thing a little better! My boyfriend and I have put a down payment on a Royal Asscher that I am in love with and ultimately hope to end up with -- I would be so lucky to have this ring, I just want him to be comfortable with the stone. It is an I VS1, 2.63, no flourescence, with the Royal Asscher inscription and registration number in the girdle. We''ve seen it in person and its gorgeous. The price of the stone is $27,700. Can anyone tell me if this is the market rate, it seems to be from my perspective, but i''m a novice! Thanks for any input/advice!

Hey there, I don''t know much about asschers but I just looked up two that were bigger in carat weight on www.whiteflash.com and both were a lot cheaper. But that is online, you may be dealing with a B&M. You could look in some of the threads and see other places to look and compare as well.

You need to post some more specs so the PS''ers that can help you will have something to go by.

I''ll bump you up.....Good luck...

I don''t think there''s much negotiation you can do with RAs. You''re paying for a specific, unique branded item and you have to pretty much pay the asking price. It should be a gorgeous stone and I hope you''ll post pictures when you get it!

thanks guys! i guess for me, we've decided to go Royal Asscher vs. Generic Asscher, and i definitely understand the difference between them -- i know you pay about a 25% premium for a Royal, so I am curious if anyone else out there who has purchased one or shopped for one (Royal specifically) can speak to the price issue.

We were not able to negotiate them down at all, you are so right about that -- it seems that its definitely a fixed price, they didn't come down a dime, and i figured it was due to the R.A. status, but want to be sure (and comfort my boyfriend before he drops that check!) of other people's experiences!

I am hoping to be able to post pictures soon -- it was VERY hard to walk out of that store and leave it behind!! :)

Congratulations. I love RA''s and I definitely think they are worth the premium. Can''t wait to see your pics. I''m sure the stone is beautiful!

I just bought a 1.56 carat H, VS1, 1/100 of a milimeter off from being dead square Royal Asscher. I looked at a lot of asschers before seeing the Royal. I can say, just by looking at it with my naked eye, the cut made everything else I have seen look like junk. The cut is so good, that it picks the color up a notch or two (more like an F of a bad cut).

I was also looking at a 1.50 carat E, SI1 and the price difference was $2,300. These stones are very hard to find and I lucked out with this owner showing 5 stone...all incredible.

As to price, I got referred to the owner of a substantial jewel company. I paid $14,500. A quick comparison just in carat would put your cost at $24,500, roughly, but once you go over 2 carats, a premium kicks in. I think I was taken care of because my referral is pretty infuential with the owner.

I wouldn''t worry about price if your guy can handle it and remember, think of the price spread over hopefully a lifetime.

Perhaps you might bring the price 1k down or so, but I would be surprised if bargaining works: there are not allot of larger RA out there at any given time... as far as I know.

To make things worse, the respective proportions may not be do-able on the cheap. So even if some generic stones are cut for brilliance like that, they are not going to be among the best prices - quite the opposite. Unless it is an old asscher cut and you find it loose (not in some piece of antique jewelry) like this:
