Hi All,

Fairly new to pricescope (been lurking for a couple months) and have finally decided to pull the trigger. Went in to Good Old Gold today to compare some of the rounds (H and A) in my price range ($10k-$15k) and put one on hold. Came in nervous about the J color, but when I saw it by itself (not next to the G VS2), it was hard to tell the difference. Jonathan was great (as expected) and really educated me on diamonds in general. Sarah put on the finishing touches (choosing the right setting, etc).

Wanted to get the experts take from this forum.. Thanks in advance!

Welcome! Bet you had an awesome experience! Would love to see a picture of your beautiful diamond!

Looks like its going to be a stunning diamond... congrats!

I actually put that one on hold last summer and was on the verge of buying it, but I chickened out when I saw photos of it next to a G and H. I decided J was too much tint for me, and I was buying long distance so I couldn't do a side by side comparison. But if you've already seen it in person, the color must not be unpleasant. It's a gorgeous diamond. Congratulations!

Thanks for all the replies! HVVS, when looked at using the GIA lighting system they have in store at a 45% angle, you can definitely see the delineation between the G and the J. I actually had it narrowed down to the one mentioned and this one:

Even though I could tell the difference in the tint when looked at under the bright lighting, I couldn''t justify the >50% increase in cost for the diamond. When looked at by itself, the tint was there, but not as obvious...

Final decision is still pending (have it on hold till next Thurs), so there''s still time to change my mind..

Will the intended notice the tint? Will it be bothersome in some way/shape/form? Justifying the price difference shouldn''t just be based on your preferences alone, IMHO. Heck of a nice cut though.

Well I would love a J color diamond in that size and with that quality of cut!

I think many many women would.

That said, it is important to know how your intended feels about color just to be on the safe side. Does she know much about diamonds? Do her friends and family talk about diamond specs when someone gets engaged? If the answer is no, or she has expressed that she doesn''t care one iota, or that she likes the slightly warm white of a J color diamond, then I say pull the trigger dude!

Its a lovely diamond!

Thanks again for all the feedback! A lot of her friends have been getting engaged, but I don''t think she knows the technicalities. With that being said, if she were to put the diamond up against another that had a higher color grade, I''m not sure if she''d notice and more importantly if she would mind.

I''m torn between keeping the proposal a surprise and talking things through with her as far as specific preferences. So far, she has been keen on the two things (in order of importance): size and sparkle.

Any advice from others who were in a similar position?

Looks like you took care of the size and sparkle factor.

When I got engaged, I had a J very similiar size. I loved that stone, Ioved the size, loved the color- it was very beautiful in all lighting, but honestly I would have preferred picking out the setting with him. We knew we were getting married, and I knew he was cooking something up, but I would have liked to be in on it. He asked for some clues, and I also said, size and sparkle, and was vague because I didn''t want to seem demanding. Meanwhile, I was very busy looking at ring pictures right and left.

If she has lots of friends getting engaged, there''s a lot of ring talk going on, and she may have developed some very specific ideas but isn''t saying anything. I didn''t, but I definately had some ideas in mind.... Years later, when we upgraded for our anniversary, I picked exactly what I wanted.

When my son got engaged I shopped with him for a princess cut, I think it was around 1.3 ct.. He also went for surprising her. My daughter in law was super happy with her stone, thrilled really, however, she immediately had it reset in the style of her choice. But that''s what I love about her.

It''s very good of you to take so much time and thought about what will make her happy.

Wow, that J looks crystal clear and amazing! you have made such a right decision! My advice would be to put it in a beautiful solitaire tiffany style setting and show the beauty of it, any girl would love that! Then match it up with an eternity wedding band when the time comes. Regardless, whatever your ring choice is it will be beautifull since you have a perfect cut stone! Best of luck to you!

Put the stone in a simple inexpensive tiffany-style setting for now and offer a setting upgrade for your first anniversary, before the wedding or when ever you like. She can pick that one to suit her taste.

It's a beautiful stone and it'll make a lovely ring.

Hey 49er!

Just wanted to say it was a pleasure to meet you face to face the other day. We always enjoy it when a client can visit our bricks anre mortar store and put their own eyes to the products we teach about and feature online.

All the best,

Congrats on finding a great stone.....

I bet Rhino is as animated IRL as he is in his videos . You''d never know it from his oh-so-professionally conservative looking avatar.

If you girlfriend holds her J diamond next to her friends stones, it will not look tinted (to the vast majority of people), I promise. Also, they will not have super ideal cut diamonds most likely, so hers will blow everyone out of the water.

ahhh! THAT IS THE EXACT DIAMOND I AM LOOKING FOR! haha give it back! I have been searching on GOG and have yet to find one!

haha jk! looks so great.. but then again I''m biased cuz I want the warmth of a J with perfect proportions but with the sliught icyness of like a F or G... which is what you got! and I really think that if you find the right J, they look soo great! and it seems you did a great job of picking one!

Thanks all! Feeling more and more confident by the day! I plan on putting the rock in a simple 6-prong Tiffany setting (made by Vatche)...

Getting very excited!
