Hello all,
I feel like I'm trying to be pushed into this purchase. Long story short, I contacted a vendor I've worked with before asking if they had anything available better than the diamond I was currently looking at (https://www.eternitybyyoni.com/diamond_detail.php?id=2630929&ref=pricescope).

They said they do and they have a client for this stone but if I pay fast, it's mine. This seems like a red flag to me, if this was for another customer. The salesman said their stone is 2 cut grades superior. She said the stone listed above is excellent, while her stone (listed below) is Premium Ideal.

I wanted to get thoughts on if this is a fair purchase. It's a .90 carat, G, VS2, Excellent cut diamond just like my other stone listed above I was looking at. I was offered a price with discount for a returning customer of $4,400 (about a $197 discount from original price).

I still feel this to be a little high but wanted to see if someone with more expertise could assist me on this purchase. Below is the GIA report of the stone from this vendor selling for $4400. I have seen zero pictures of it.

Thoughts? Thank you in advance for the advice.

4.4k for a G VS2 well cut stone with ideal proportions is more than fair, especially with no fluo. It is excellent.

I ran the HCA tool (https://www.pricescope.com/tools/hca) and the AGA Cut Class Grader tool (https://www.pricescope.com/tools/AGA_NAJA_Cut_Class_Grader) on both stones:

Your original diamond choice -- 0.90ct G-VS2 - GIA 6251119439
HCA = 1.4 - Excellent within TIC range (Excellents for Light Return/Fire/Scintillation and Very Good for Spread) - and falls within the AGSO white line box

AGA Cut Class Tool - 1B total score (with 1As in all categories, excepting 2A for crown angle and 1B for depth)

Listed Inclusions = feather, crystal

Vendor's recommended diamond -- 0.90ct G-VS2 - GIA 3235348046
HCA = 1.6 - Excellent within TIC range (Excellents for Light Return/Fire/Scintillation and Very Good for Spread) - and falls within the AGSO white line box

AGA Cut Class Tool - 1A total score (with 1As in all categories, excepting 1B for crown angle)

Listed Inclusions = feather

NOTE: Both of the diamonds are GIA triple Excellent stones, per the GIA certs. Vendor can call their stone "premium ideal" but it is a marketing label and not an objective classification. That said, from the numbers the vendor's recommended stone is the better cut diamond. However, you haven't seen even a photo of it. While your original choice is slightly deep, the HCA number is good and the AGA 1B score is still better than many GIA XXX stones out there.

The vendor has a decent return policy, yes? I get what you're saying about the sales tactic and it wouldn't fly with me either. Still, you must have had a good experience before with that vendor since you decided to check in with them on this project. Ask for photos/video of the recommended diamond ... if they come through, maybe buy that one and have them send it to you loose? Or, stick with your first choice which is likely to have an excellent performance.

I didn't check comps so can't comment re pricing.

flyingpig and marymm...thank you so much for your response. Your time taken to answer my question is greatly appreciated! They did send me some pictures, ASET, IdealScope, etc. They sent me around 10 pictures in total. It looks good to me. I'm getting a second opinion. I think the price is fair on the Vendors recommended stone. It's about $300 more expensive but if it's superior, I don't mind paying a little extra.

marymm....yes, the vendor has a 30 day return policy. I've worked with the owner prior and it was a positive experience. This has been as well, I just didn't appreciate the sales tactics. I approached them, they don't need to rush me, I'm obviously interested. My goal is to buy it loose and have it set locally.

Post the pictures here if you wanted further opinion on optical symmetry and light performance

Here are some pictures they sent me. The sales person is telling me it's 100% hearts and arrows. I'm not sure I agree judging by the pictures but maybe someone with more knowledge can chime in. Thanks!
