Rough cut diamond rings

Am looking for something unique for my wife and playing with the idea of getting a rough cut diamond ring built. I just haven't seen a lot of designs I've liked. Will probably pick up a gem/jewelry quality stone. Prefer something with a bit of color. Just fishing for some ideas in case the crowd has come across anything I may have missed. This is something she could wear for a nice outing so while the stone may be rough, the ring/design should be more elegant.

Thanks!

Even if you could procure a rough diamond, why would you want to set it in a ring? No one would be able to even appreciate that it was a diamond - it would just look like a piece of rock. This would require a lot more homework on your part to see if it was even doable. Can't imagine that any woman would prefer that over a well cut, polished diamond!

Well, I submit, most everyone has a polished stone so uniqueness is certainly a facet that would be desirable. There are some gem quality rough diamonds with a bit of shine that can run into the 10's of thousands if that's what you want. I saw one in particular for about 3k that might fit the bill nicely and so just looking for a setting. I get that not everyone would desire one, but to say no one would be overstating.

But the real question is would your wife see the beauty in them? I appreciate you wanting something unique for her but just make sure it fits into her definition of desirable. I know lots of jewelry lovers and I can practically guarantee that not one of them would want such a thing. To the public at large, a well cut, PS quality diamond of say one carat or more is unique. I guarantee such a thing would catch everyone's eye!

Would you consider a rose cut diamond instead?

That's cut, it is faceted, but it does not really return light so it will be very unique and not "look like everyone else" but still be valuable

To your point, people will not put a "quality" rough into those rings. If they could get more money from it being faceted, it would be.

De Beers have their “Talisman“ Collection with rough diamonds.

I saw some of these pieces in the DeBeers showroom in San Fransisco, and they're lovely. The uncut stones come in all sorts of beautiful, earthy colors, and the settings are all stunning. But, you don't get the sparkle and shine of faceted diamonds, so the beauty of the piece is more dependent on having a stunning setting than would be the case with a well-cut diamond.

But then, I find beauty in the uniqueness and unexpectedness of the uncut stone - just as I find my the very, very heavily included diamond in my father's ring to have its own special beauty: https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/carbonado.218109/

That said, most people would see a rough cut diamond as just another stone - as opposed to, say, a diamond - or a novelty. If you want to get your wife a ring that says "my husband gave me this beautiful diamond ring," you should probably go with a faceted diamond, and leave the rough cut for some other occasion. If she's already had a chance to scratch her sparklies itch though... go for it!

I love to browse through John Betts' selection of diamond crystals - some of them are incredibly beautiful to my eyes albeit in a different, more understated way as compared to faceted diamonds - http://www.johnbetts-fineminerals.com/jhbnyc/diamonds.htm. And I know at some future undetermined point in time I will have one of Jill Anish's rustic diamond rings on my finger! https://www.etsy.com/shop/JanishJewels?section_id=6993934.

All that said, I wholeheartedly agree with other posters to really be sure your wife would appreciate a rough diamond ring; and like Niel above think perhaps a rose-cut diamond ring would be another alternative to consider. FWW I also like Jill's rose-cut rings [https://www.etsy.com/shop/JanishJewels?section_id=7092525, and I have my eye on several of the loose rose-cut diamonds on Jewels by Grace's website http://www.jewelsbygrace.com/]

Yeah his place rocks (pun intended). She's getting a few things over the next year so I wanted to mix it up a bit.
