That works, but comes up funky! You'd also have to import the data into excel and then clean it up. I suppose I'll just post the information individually...get ready for a long post!

Whew! Done!!

Sorry about spelling out some of the reference numbers...but it displayed as a smiley character if I didn't.

Okay, so I noticed that there is more encouragement towards going brighter. I've also heard that "cut is king".... Is it better to go with a lower cut and a higher color then? Would color "I" still be okay?

About whiteflash and brian gavin...I like them, but I'm going to stick with James Allen. I don't want to run multiple things on my credit and I'm not sure if I will be approved. If all the money was in the bank, then I'd go for it though. :)

billmill, with a budget of $13k, do consider a super ideal diamond. It will face up whiter and takes the stress out of worrying about how it will look. These are guaranteed to look phenomenal and eye clean.

or

https://www.briangavindiamonds.com/...lassic-style-half-round-18k-rose-gold-5478r18

both of which I far prefer to the simple JA peg head

When I was initially buying a ring I also got a little caught up in JA. The diamond we bought from JA was fine, there was nothing wrong with it, it was a GIA XXX with HCA <2, eye clean, but my second diamond from BG flows the JA out of the water in terms of how it looks :) hope this helps

okay so if K color is okay and "size is nice" I'm thinking #66 might be in the running. Keeps you above 8mm and 2 cts. Falls into the preferred angles. I'd see if you can get an asset for that one. Otherwise I drop down to below 8mm which is fine, but if K works, then this might be a good one for you.

Thank you ratatat for the advice! You too lookinagain! :)

I see what you are saying about Brian Gavin. I went on there and was approved for more than I was at JA. So that is really good! Also...so are you saying that Brian Gavin is better than JA...I noticed that the same cut/style/etc. of diamond is a bit more expenive at Brian Gavin though it seems. The K color diamond you recommended versus this one: https://www.jamesallen.com/loose-di...k-color-vs1-clarity-excellent-cut-sku-2775771 ...why would Brian Gavin be better?

Holy list! I can't even begin to sift through all of that... are you plugging everything into the HCA tool to eliminate?

Honestly I'd go with WF over Brian Gavin because BG's upgrade policy is a little tricky and annoying.

Are you totally set on JA? If so, narrow it down to at least 10 max... use the HCA tool to weed some out!

Well...I screwed up! I was showing examples of ring settings and accidentally had open the petite flower https://www.jamesallen.com/engageme...e-flower-solitaire-engagement-ring-item-50164 which she saw. She immediately fell in love with it. I showed her other styles and tried to play it off as just an example of different types. She then stated something along the lines of: "Go back to that one. I like that one. That one if my favorite." So...I guess that solved the ring setting piece...so now what should I do?

Now you find a diamond? That setting is very inexpensive so it's not eating into your diamond budget...

Do you know what the HCA tool is?

Find some diamonds and plug the stats into this:

https://www.pricescope.com/tools/hca

When you find 3 that you like, put them on hold with JA and request IdealScope images. Come back here and share them.

I sure do. Did you see the super long post I had earlier? All of the diamonds listed there have a 2.0 or lower on the HCA. Any recommendations?

Also, considering the setting will cover up the sides of the stone should I stick with a warmer color or go brighter? I think it was Rocky Salamander who stated that it doesn't matter about light since it all comes from the top anyway. Just wondering about looks.

Thanks lalala! :) "Keep moving on!" Love it! :)

Are you looking at a rose gold setting? Can't remember if that was you or someone else.

I saw your post above but was overwhelmed by the 60+ choices. I think you should narrow it down to your top 5 and then come back.

So, if you are doing rose gold or yellow gold, you could go down to a J in color. If you're doing white gold or platinum, I'd stick with H and up. You *might* be able to get away with an I if you were looking at super ideals (like Whiteflash's ACA) but you're not.

Rose gold definitely. Yes, I too am overwhelmed with the list! :)

is Brian Gavin and White Flash really that much better?

billmil, BG and WF are cream of the crop diamonds. You don't necessarily need one of these to have a very beautiful sparkly diamond, it just depends what is most important to you.

If you want to maximise size for your budget and you're happy with a diamond that will be sparkly enough, JA will do the job. If you want to maximise sparkle and know you're getting the best cut diamond at the expense of a little size, or one of the other c's, BG or WF is the way to go. They are more expensive because they are precision cut so you're not comparing apples with apples just looking at the stats. It just depends how important it is to you. People on these forums are a little nuts (myself included). In the real world most people probably won't care so much about the nuance of cut but getting a super ideal is a nice way or knowing that you have got the best. JA is not a bad site by any means.

If you don't think you are going to upgrade later down the track it doesn't matter which you pick. If you do think you will upgrade the WF has the best policy, I feel followed by BG followed by JA. So it's really down to personal preference :)

thanks ratatat! :) That helps quite a bit!

I will repeat what I said above. I think you should take her to a store (high end, not TIffany or Harry Winston level and not a mall store -- something in between) to look at GIA graded color diamond. Have them show her a K first (walk it away from the overhead LED lights and try to get into natural, indirect light). Before you spend 10k on a ring, you need to know she won't be bothered by it. Failing that, I would not personally go below an H or I in a diamond from JA. Most people, even the most color insensitive, will tend to see color starting at an I unless you are are talking super-ideal and then WF and HighPerformanceDiamonds have great policies and maybe I'd take a chance.

What does your girl do for a living? What about hobbies? Does you have conversations about white, ecru and ivory or does she call them all "white"? Is she very into fashion or home dec? Does she spend hours finding just the right shade of paint/shoes/shirt? Does she knit or crochet or quilt?

Holy list is right...Until you know her color sensitivity, I would eliminate the J and K colors. That brings you down to 36 options. Of those 36, I used a narrowed version of the below list plus any visible inclusions to eliminate many. There were still a lot, so since I prefer a smaller table, I eliminated anything over 57% and any CA over 35.5% and anything missing arrows. There as still many, but I would prioritize size in mm and some of the choices suggested by myself and @valeria101 get you some more size. Of this list below, #24 & 31 are the largest. I eliminated 9, 14 and 20 as the smallest and eliminated a few that had additional clouds. That got me to the below 11. I'd look at cost and prioritize anything with a table 56 and under. I kept 31 as the largest even though it has a higher CA.

table: 54-58
depth: 60-62.3
crown angle: 34-35.0 (up to 35.5 crown angle can sometimes work with a 40.6 pav angle)
pavilion angle: 40.6-40.9 (sometimes 41.0 if the crown angle is close to 34)

Relative to financing a diamond, my advice is don't or at least minimize it. You would be much better off buying a more modest diamond that you can reasonably afford and then upgrade as you can afford to do so. Many PS members bought a WF or HPD diamond and then used their upgrade policy several times to increase the size. If you are financing due to a cash flow issue (you are waiting for a bonus and will pay it off then), fine...otherwise...buy what you can afford. This is not a wise financial choice and I'd be pissed if my BF had financed my ring. In fact, I specifically told him I'd rather wear a ring I already had than take on any debt for a diamond.

Oh my Rocky Salamander! Thank you so much! Sorry though, didn't mean to upset you if I did.

About high end store...what would that be? I actually only know of Mall stores, Diamonds Direct, JA, Brian Gavin, White Flash, and Tiffanys....I have no clue about other stores. I live in Gloucester, VA and there is a Kay Jewelers in this town. I am also 60 miles from Richmond, VA...do you know of any stores near me?

She is a teacher, not into fashion...or at least never has been. Once she started teaching was when she bought some nicer clothes. All colors are "white". She actually says that I am much more sensitive to color matching and choosing outfits. She used to sew quite a bit, but after starting school that kind of stopped. Current hobbies: watching television and relaxing for the both of us. Since she started teaching she has to grade papers all the time! So most evenings and weekends are spent lounging around and grading. I am also in school part time so I am usually working on homework. Prior to starting our academics we enjoyed camping, going to parks or scenic sites, and just spending time together walking around towns. She used to go to a lot of concerts/festivals when she was younger, but she would dress "hippie matching" as she calls it.

Okay, so eliminate the "J" and "K" colors.

Though now I have to ask about all the angle comments you have above...how do you decide and/or figure that stuff out? I have no clue. All I did was sort through and then use the HCA to determine diamonds. After that I can see the picture, but can't tell much else. What else should I be doing to narrow down the diamonds?

I also have another good/bad snag. The petite flower solitaire that you recommended initially states that it can be set with a .3 to 1.5 size diamond. Anything else I would have to contact them for a custom setting and then wait 3-5 days to see if they can do it and how much additional it will cost. So should I search more/again and find diamonds within that range, narrow them down, and then come back to y'all?

THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH!!! For all the time and effort you have invested in this!

THANK YOU EVERYONE!!!

I was not the least bit upset! Sorry if my early morning reply came across that way.

https://www.burkesjewelers.com/ is a 40 minute drive away.

Don't go with the intention of buying, simply looking (lock up your wallet if either of you are impulsive!). Ask them to show you a GIA XXX J and K colored diamond. Ask them to get those 4 numbers (crown angle, pavilion angle, table and depth) on the top stones as close as possible and within the ideal ranges noted above. Remember...seeing color and being bothered by it are different. So, you are trying to discern what both of you like.

For the surprise option and avoiding going custom, I'm going to change the size from 1.4-1.5. I color and above. Nice solid angles. Small table to get amazing fire. I also looked for chubby arrows to provide good contrast.

At this price point, I like this HPD super-ideal especially for the tradeup and buy-back policy.

If would put your top choices on hold and request IS images from your top 3 JA options (that don't already have an IS). I'd also see about putting the HPD stone on old as it is a great price! What I would not do is add more options to your list...:mrgreen2::lol-2:

Pardon my intrusion, but I am going to chime in on the financing and budget. If she's a teacher 60 miles out of Richmond, a large stone is not going to be practical and may even cause some social tension. What kind of stones do her friends and colleagues have?

On top of that, it sounds like a larger budget is stretching you financially since you require financing to buy the ring. Both of those considered, I would reconsider the budget and target stone size.

I know it is none of my business, but I needed to through this advice out there. I hope I didn't offend.

LOL Rocky Salamander!!! Too late! :) I agree with going a little lower on the carat! I started looking and chatting with Brian Gavin too. I am adding a few more to the list, but nowhere near what I did before!

Thank you for finding a fine jewelry store! I'm going to bother you again though. I work 50 miles away in the opposite direction from home. Do you know of any fine jewelers in the Newport News, VA area? Or a 25-30 mile radius from there? Or...what google search did you put in to find a fine jeweler in the area?

I have to ask though...about the different recommendations that you had from the large list I created and the recommendations that you just added above. Are these better in your opinion or are all of them good? Also, if I contact JA about the IS, which ones do you think I should contact them about?

Finally, here are the options within my price range on Brian Gavin. (Yes, I do have "K" color diamonds on there, but are those okay if the diamond is super ideal? (Yes, I still plan on going to a fine jeweler to see the color in person.) I understand that I can purchase a diamond from somewhere else and have JA put it in the setting that she liked. I also talked with Brian Gavin and explained that I am looking for a flower style setting. The person on the chat stated that they would get back to me tomorrow with options.

My apologies if you are repeating things stated prior...I'm getting a little lost/overwhelmed (in a good way) with it all.

Okay, Brian Gavin search results sorted by color:

Tophat1, no offense at all! You are right. I just am getting glowing eyes seeing what is out there. I do need to be realistic, I agree.

I would love to buy a ring outright without any financing, but unfortunately I can't do it. If I did, I'd be looking in approximately the 2K range for a ring. I could wait a few more years, but we have been together almost 6 years...don't really want to put it off any longer. We also have received approximately 8K in a tax return for the last few years and I'm betting on a similar tax return.

I know there have been recommendations about trading up later on...I don't want to do that. I'd rather buy it once and be done.

Not trying to come across harsh if I am. I really like all the comments/suggestions received on here! Please provide your opinions and don't be worried about offending me at all!

Thank you all again!

I gotta run and errand, but BGD trade-in policy is similar to JA. Whiteflash and HighPerformanceDiamond are more generous.

My list was intended to narrow the size to 1.4-1.5 to keep within the JA setting size. There are lots of good choices, so I cherry-picked keeping color I and above and angles and the actual diamond performance looking good. Lots of ways to slice a pie.

I can understand buying once and being done, but you know that might not happen anyway? People evolve and change over time. . I'd focus on buying a nice ring now that suits her and your social setting now (not for the rest of your life). Upgrading discomfort is only a "thing" if you are sentimental about rocks. I don't happen to be. I am sentimental about my wedding band. That represents our vows and promises to each other for a lifetime, the Ering is simply a promise to marry. You need to do what you feel is right, but I'd suggest trying to re-frame this whole thing. My grandmother was a jeweller and would tell this to people all the time. Buy the best you can with little to no debt. Buy better when life allows.

What about something like this?

https://www.whiteflash.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut-loose-diamond-3916984.htm

J color with med blue fluorescence which may help it look whiter (not that I don't think it will look very white face up)

Well cut - likely only missed ACA because of the fluoro

Just under 1 carat, so no price jump for being over the 1 ct weight

WF upgrade policy applies

Does your girlfriend like halos? That's a good way to give the ring more presence for about $1500 more than the setting you chose

.
You are in good hands .-)

Among the BGD H & I, I'd throw the dice.

It is a pleasure to sift among such choices, yet - they are all 7 - 8 mm white & bright, & oh so much alikeª ! Yes, the difference of size is obvious between the smallest & the largest on the list so far - but not enough to be greatly distinct as a single-stone ring, IHMO (Honi soit qui mal y pense !)

_____
ª so much alike , that I have, eventually, turned away - to these things WWW (for what it might not matter)

That's really nice tophat1

Valeria101... so you're saying they are all so-so.... or that they're all good choices?

Valeria101.... so you're saying none of those are good choices for a solitaire?

.

OH , NO ! Not at all. They are ALL GOOD.

Okay, I am joining this party late, but I would go no lower than J VS2, personally, and I'd prefer H-I color. I'd absolutely do a platinum head which makes the prongs more invisible against the stone and do the shank in rose gold. She needs a low set wedding band so that the diamonds don't hit against the prongs on the engagement ring and cut a groove in them. Keep that in mind for future reference.

There have been sooo many stones posted on this thread that it will be easier for me to pick some out for you. But before I do, are you definitely going with JA? I personally love Whiteflash and would recommend them, but since you have the credit at JA, I can understand going with them. Although you could always use the credit to buy her diamond studs or some other jewelry piece. Your wedding band could be bought there. In fact, I just bought my husband a replacement wedding band this weekend with their 25% off sale!
