Rookie question about ring head size

I'm new to looking into engagement rings but have found a setting that I am in love with. On the website it says the setting has a head size of 6.5mm.

Does this mean it can only be fitted with a diamond of 6.5mm? A bigger diamond wouldn't fit?

Thank you in advance

Some ring makers will make the head in different sizes. It all depends on the setting. Can you link it? You definitely want a head that is the correct size for your stone.

The head has to accommodate both the stone's width and depth. Normally there is room for slight variation, but if your stone is much larger than 6.5mm you consider whether the setting can accommodate a new head, or look for a different setting.

If the ring has a peg head (it attaches via a peg that fits into a hole in the shank) it's easy to have the vendor change it (change the head itself) to accommodate something smaller, larger, or an entirely different shape.

Also look at (or ask about) the depth or height of the head. Some heads, like the Stuller Octet and the taller version of the Stuller Solstice, are a little oversized for a round brilliant, height-wise, and can be spread out a bit wider to accommodate a slightly wider diameter stone. The stone would sit lower in the head in that case. Round diamonds aren't usually all that deep, but the August Vintage rounds and AV cushions, and Asschers, just to name some, are very deep compared to a round brilliant of the same diameter.

Let me say that all antique cushions are deeper stones, not just AV cushions. But it isn't true of all the AV rounds. I am looking at one right now that is 1.8 cts and 7.8mm diameter and 62.2% depth which is in the normal diameter and depth range for a round brilliant. Some are deeper than others, though.

We do need to see a picture of the setting to have an idea of what could be done if the maker doesn't make the setting with various size heads.

Thank you to all of you! It turns out there is an identical version with a bigger head for a larger stone :) only a few hundred extra :)

Okay, that is usually the case. I am glad it worked out for you!
