Roman or Victorian Intaglio?

Hi everyone,

I saw this amethyst intaglio ring online and was wondering if anyone can tell if it could be Roman, or if it is more likely to be a revival from the 1800s..It seems very detailed, with a lion on a ship, and the stone is worn, so might be very old...But I'm not sure if Roman intaglios had that almost rectangular shape - I've seen it more often on fob seals.

Thank you very much! Any info greatly appreciated.

Because of the faceting behind the stone, I believe this is late Victorian, or even into the 1920s.
It's very cool!

Great point. I think ancient stone carvings were flat cut/portrait cut.

Looking at 18th Century intaglios I think this ring is Victorian, and even the Amethyst might be a revival of the Napolean style. Just my guess.

I don’t think it is Roman, not from Napolean Era. I think carving is too detailed for example. Just a guess.

I agree. The carving is too fine and probably done with modern steel carving tools and burrs.
Looking at Roman intaglios, they seem to be more basic and rudimentary.
