I am having trouble finding stones in my range of $$$$, size, color, quality, etc. Thats another topic though. I have searched through the vendors on this site and there isnt much available and I am in a hurry. What I am looking for is a Princess cut, 1.7-2.0 carat, AGS 0 ONLY, SI 1, F-G color.

MY real question today is...

My girlfriend found a ring at Jarreds. Its a Scott Kay 19k white gold knife/razor edge ring with two (peek-a-boo) stones at the bottom of the prongs. First question is, does 19k white gold really stay white longer?

I was told that I could change the prongs to Platinum, will that help to sparkle of the stone?

The peek-a-boo stones are round and my gf loves princess, even though she liked the ring I feel like I shouldn''t mix the shapes??

Any good sites to check out razor/knife edge rings?????

Please help, I so what to start purchasing so I can propose:)
 
The alloy of the white gold, the non-gold components, detemines how white and how non-tarnishing the white gold will be. It does stand to reason that the more gold in an item, the higher the karat content, the more yellow it would tend to be since gold is bright yellow when pure and never white.

Chemistry and metallurgy play a part in getting the white gold whiter and more tarnish free. It is the alloy material that darkens over time and it is the yellowness of the gold that sometimes comes through in some mixtures of white gold. Some alloys turn out whiter and less prone to tarnish.

Don''t buy the sizzle. Its the diamond that''s the steak in this purchase, not the mounting. Find the diamond and then worry over getting it set. Its good to determine what you want at any time and worry about getting it after the main purchase is finished. One step at a time in manageable.
 
19kt wg probably won''t stay whiter longer than 14kt wg. Changing the prongs to platinum won''t help sparkle, but platinum prongs are recommended for durability reasons. You may be less likely to lose a center stone with platinum prongs. Mixing shapes in the setting is preference, I think it''s a fun look personally!

Before you buy from Jared''s do a search for them...there have been some no so pleasant experiences here. There was even a person who had jared''s chip the center stone and then not replace the stone and even lie and say that the chip was there before...really bad behavior.
 
You can buy the same Scott Kay ring elsewhere too Jay without having to deal with Jareds. Pearlman's who has good prices and is a well known vendor here sells Scott Kay if you want to get her the same ring.
 
Here is a nice "surprise diamond" setting from White Flash. (FWIW, I don't think it matters if the center is princess and the small accents are round.)

WF does excellent custom work and may be able to incorporate surprise diamonds into a knife-edge setting.

Ditto re: the feedback about Jared. Do a search of the forums on them and you will find lots of stories that will illustrate some concerns.

Ditto what others have said about ordering a scott kay through pearlman''s instead of jared''s. Bill pearlman is a really nice guy and more trustworthy than jared''s.

I too wanted a princess center stone, and I fell in love with surprise diamond settings. I looked at many settings with round surprise diamonds and liked them a lot. I don''t think there would be any weirdness in mixing the shapes, since surprise diamonds are somewhat "removed" from the center stone (not like a 3-stone ring, where I definitely wouldn''t mix round and square). I eventually went with a princess/princess combination, which you can take a look at here.

GOG has this stone, but it''s also 1.6.

FYI- Scott Kay does make settings with a kite-set princess surprise diamond. It looks like the picture here (obviously a different setting.) If you are worried about the shapes, you can ask if they can make the surprise stone like this in your ring.

For what it''s worth though, I don''t think it''s a problem at all!
