Okay, I''ll tell you what. I''ll hold her down. You nab him, and the ring. And while your seducing him with your cooking and cleaning and female wiles... I''ll just erm... run off with your cushion. That sounds fair right?

No mines a ... well it''s a ... hmm. Just a generic X-prong. The cheap and dirty special for indecisive fiance''s who don''t know what cut their diamond is going to be and therefore can''t pick a setting. I drove DF NUTS with the settings. Finally gave up said ''something like the Tiffany Lucida setting is fine'' and told FI to get it in 10K WG if he could (he couldn''t 14K was the lowest our jeweler had) cause that baby was gonna be replaced ASAP. Four years, and 1000 settings chosen and dismissed later... I''m going custom.

All that and you only asked a simple little itty bitty question. I babble. Sorry.
 
It might help to compare the thicker band above to a thinner band ring. Mine is ~1ct princess with shank 3mm at the thickest part, and narrows into the head to form a "bow" look.

I''ve been following along with yours and Isaku''s thread...those halos were really something...a neat spin on what''s been around here. You going to end up making me halo my cushion! And btw, the halo WAS my first choice despite me being a no nonsense girl. There were so many simple solitaires when I first started lurking here that lovey''s/winnie''s/fatguy''s ring knocked my socks off. I showed it to FI, and he flat out said "that''s disgusting." I was like, "Wha???"

He said it was too busy but if I wanted it, that was fine. Guess it''s a simple''s guy taste - or lack thereof (another reason I want to marry Pokey...obviously he understands art!) My guy would have set my cushion in a bolt washer if he could have.

But I thought about it long and hard and realized that my ring should also be a reflection of what he would want to give me as well. My second choice was the JC (which he was a huge fan of) and the more I thought about it, I realized I could never maintain a fancy setting. I then read all those threads about melee/pave popping out and that did it for me...I didn''t want to ever deal with replacing that stuff. Yes, I am too LAZY to have a wowzer ring!!

Did I miss something? Didn't you have a cushion with a halo?

I like that setting too...my mom's cushion is set is something similar.

As for my guy. Hmm... yeah, I just wanted your cushion. The seducing and all that... no much effort. LOL. Not to mention the training. Although...hmm... he seems very well trained already, come to think of it.... Nah.

I like pave halos but I prefer them with colored stones (again, blasphemy) for myself. Thanks for the compliments on the baguette halos. Honestly though... if I had diamond other than a 1 carat asscher, I wouldn''t want one-- baguette or other wise. I love them for other people, mind you and ADORE looking at them. But it''s all the maintanence-- and my mother has a RB in a pave halo... so it''s also that I want something completely different from her look.

I am very much looking forward to my reset however. My powerpoint presentation is very good, if I do say so myself.

Sorry...JC for "Jeff Cooper", who is my setting''s designer. As far as my FI is concerned, JC could easily stand for Jesus Christ, because it "saved" him from forking out a lot more money for the halo setting!

Oh my FI likes his designs as well. LOL at the Jesus Christ thing. That's one good thing about dragging my feet for four years on a setting. FI REALLY does not care what I get now, as long as I get something I'm happy with. Although he has said that he likes the 8 baguette halo design very much.

Thanks for the replies! If anyone else could point me to more sample photos, I''d really appreciate it. I''ve looked in the photo gallery, but there are so many different rings there, that it is hard to find a sample of exactly what I am looking for.
A little more info, she is about 5''6", 133 pounds, average size hands with a ring finger of 5 3/4. Oh, and she is a/my gorgeous brunette...:):)

I have a hard time with proportions on the monitor ... I think something looks good, and then I go see something in person, and it did not look the same.

when I can, I love trying on rings that I think are pretty, and then I put them back for different reasons ... I have been quite surprized in the past though ... with what I thought I would like proportion wise, and reality.

I guess I still don't understand. Doesn't she WANT a thicker band? You said that is what she likes. To me, 3 mm is not a thick band.
 
I don''t know if you specified this or not already, but have you two acutally went ring shopping or just talked about it? If she wants something specific (like I did) you two should go shopping. She can show you examples that she likes and then you can pick it out and surprise her if you want. IMO, this is such a big purchase and decision, you need to get it right - no guessing.

I picked my ring out and had Tacori change about 4 things on it, so obviously, I knew exactly what I wanted. There''s no way my boyfriend could have or would have gotten it right

She likes something more on the thicker side, BUT I don;t want to spend 8k on a ring where the diamond is overshadowed by too thick a band. I don''t -really- want to take her around trying a bunch on because I would kind of like to have the end product be somewhat of a suprise.
I know that she would love to have platinum, around 1 carat (the color/cut etc. she doesn''t know much about, but I plan to stick with F/VS1), and would rather have a thicker band than say a thin tiffany style.
 
Not as if you asked for an opinion or anything on anything other than the width of the setting...but, one vote for the x prong!

OH and if you haven't already bought the diamond (don't recall if you have) DEFINITELY look at www.dimendscassi.com he has some lovely settings, but you have to buy the diamond from him to get them... which isn't a hardship as he's got a nice selection is helpful and knowledgable.

Erm... also... is there a reason why you won't look at a G or a VS2?

And finally, I know you said you both agree with a 2 carat is big enough... but are you sure she knows that princesses at one carat are MUCH smaller than rounds at 1 carat?

A well cut one carat round will have a spread of about 6.5 x 6.5 a princess at the same carat weight will be lucky to have 6x6. Especially with a thicker band... you might want to consider a 1.25 carat G VS. It will still look like very elgant and understated but will be able to carry it's own with a thicker band much better than a 1 carat F.

ETA: solomon brothers is a good one for settings. And of course... Pearlmans.

If you''re girl loves wider jewelry, I think you have to go for it. Most girls I know that are into this style have been that way for a loooonnng time, and this is not just a fad she is going along with. I''ve attached a link to a pic of my ring in case you are looking for more examples. Although I''m not sure on the band width of my ring, I would have to say that it is around 4mm, since the stone itself is around around 5mm, and there isn''t that much of an overhang. I''m a little to lazy to look, but somewhere in this attached link are specs of the stone. Either way, my band is definitely not thin, and the carat wt is 1.01, so it should help give you an idea.
