Hi, I know it is not an easy question, but I lost 12 lbs over the last 2 months on my new diet and my doctor (unconcerned at all) says that usually the first 2 months are the fastest ones, and then the weight loss slows down. My ring size is now 8 3/4 instead of 9. The ring from Hunt Country is 8 3/4 and on the loose side. I have another ring that a jeweler is working on, do you think I should order 8 1/2? When I start losing weight, it usually happens pretty fast. I know one can not predict how much the size of the fingers would change, but if you were in my shoes, what would you do? Is it easier to size up or size down a ring?

Congratulations, Crasru! Good girl.

We're kind of in the same boat -- I've lost 30 lbs., working on the next 20 now. Groan. Oddly enough, my ring size hasn't really changed -- my usual size 7 slides around a little easier but that's all. Think my knuckles got bigger through using my hands over the years. Because in summer my hands swell a little, I still ordered a 7 for the ring Michael E. is making me.

Suggestion: go to a jewelry store & try on a few rings, see how the sizes fit -- in a similar shank width to the ring you're working on.

It's pretty inexpensive to have a ring sized either up or down, so I'd concentrate more on what's comfortable & secure on the finger. Unless, of course, it's an eternity or 3- or 5-stone; then sizing is a bit more complicated, but for 1/4 size I doubt it would be a problem anyway.

Hang in there -- let's hold each other's hand for moral support!

You GO, Girls !!!!

I would LOVE to lose a few myself,
as it is, I have been soaping my fingers to get my
rings on and off,
so I would love to have your dilemma

I would rather have a bit too snug than too loose, however.
I had a ring fly off my finger once when I was shaking my hands after washing them....
TG it wasn't one of my CS rings !!!!!

I went down a half size with about a 35 pound loss. Of course, there is the whole winter/summer thing (depending on where you live), and, as JewelFreak mentions, the band width.

Way to go Crasru :appl:

I know I have lost about 35 pounds over the last year and I know my ring size went down a 1/2 size; but I retain fluid so it all depends on how much sodium I take in.

As a person that has sized up and down a thousand rings for family, friends, clients, etc. I would go with the 8 1/2 on the new ring; you should be safe and plus it is always incentive to stay on track... I know it is a lifestyle change and not a diet... Well at least that was how it was and is for me. Plus you all know our fingers will go down some in diameter in colder weather as well.

As for ease of going up or down it all depends on how much and what configuration of the mounting, melee falls out when made smaller, and they crack, chip and pop when you go bigger. So there are risks either way; but I would wait until I reached my target weight and then get them adjusted...

I am so proud of anyone that puts forth the effort to better themselves either physically, mentally, or spiritually :)

Keep up the great work..

Most respectfully;

Dana Reynolds, csmg

Crasru,
My fingers go up and down all the time. Now that winter is here, they are spinning on my fingers. I have two 18K gold bands that I normally wear with loose rings, and I find that it helps to wear one or both with a ring that tends to be loose. Congratulations on your weight loss!!

That's an impressive weight loss, congratulations, Crasru!

I have no advice on the sizing issue, since it's one I struggle with myself every time I commission something from a new vendor, but I'll look forward to seeing your new ring!

Big thanks to all of you, dear fellows! I made my doctor do all possible studies to be sure we are on the safe side here, and no, it was my diet! Today I was able to pull off my James Meyer ring, it was was put on my middle finger almost a year ago, as a drastic measure to prevent weight gain. I love the ring, but got a little bit tired of it... My new ring is ready, but it will take me some time to get it. Thank you for your support! :D

Any hints as to what that would be??? :naughty:

Congrats on your weight loss!

At another forum I used to post at we started an ongoing thread for everyone trying to loose weight. I don't know if people would want to do that here but it's an idea. I need to loose hmm maybe up to 20 lbs.

Did I read this right? Did you wear a ring for a year without taking it off?

Dana should know... ;)) ... at least about the stone if he still remembers... I can not comment on it because I have no clue how it will look like. I had an old ring which I used as an idea, but other than that, I did not intervene like I never do...

Danny, I am all for it!

As to that ring... I called it my "chastity belt". My last measure not to gain more weight. :D

Once in my life, I woke up early in the morning to find my old ring cut into my finger so I had to use a file and a knife, and then scissors, to cut through the ring and take it off my finger (the shame of it!). So this new ring was pushed onto my middle finger and through the knuckle. I did not want to gain more weight and spoil beautiful James Meyer ring! But I could not take it off for the whole year! I started a thread about it, a year ago, and everyone here was concerned, especially LD, if I remember, bless her heart... So now it is off my middle finger.

Congrats on the weight loss! My lowest weight (which was unhealthy) was about 35 lbs below what I weigh now. My ring size actually did not change when I lost that weight and gained it back. My knuckles have always been the limiting factor in ring sizing, and my weight never goes into my hands. So I can't help too much on the ring sizing issue, although I believe it's easier and cheaper to size rings down than up. You could also have sizing beads or a sizing bar put into a ring that's a hair to big.

Congratulations csaru on your weight loss... and best wishes for the continued loss you have planned! You go girl!

I live in a climate that has extreme weather temperatures - summers can be +30C with wicked humidity, then winter can be -30C and dry as a bone. My rings spin or park, depending on the weather, hormones, alcohol (gasp! ) ... whatever the wind blows my way! I have read about sizing beads - think that would be an option? They could be set in the size you are now and removed or added to as you change along your weight loss path.

Just a thought! Good luck! :))

Congratulations on the weight loss!

Yes,I'd love to start a thread about weight loss/getting healthy too.

Ok, here's my story. I've recently lost about 53 pounds, with a few more to go. My ring size has gone from about 7 to 6-6.25. However, I swell quite a bit in the summer. In the meantime I got a 2mm white gold wedding band from eweddingbands to wear. I'm considering resetting my asscher 3 stone, but plan to wait a bit longer to see what size my hands actually settle to. When it finally does happen, though, I'll probably have it sized to fit my finger in the summer months.

I'd consider keeping the slightly larger size, *if* you're like me and suffer from summer swelling :-).

Unfortunately, I think this is an extremely variable-by-individual thing. How much do you think you'd like to lose?

In my personal experience, I lost about 42-43 pounds over about a year and a quarter. I started counting calories and exercising regularly (including quite a bit of weight training) at the same time, so I think I actually built muscle mass, or lost very little during the process-- meaning that I believe almost all of the weight loss to have been from fat. With a loss of 42 pounds, my ring size went from 6 to 4. I'm short (5'3"), and fairly small boned, though. I really did not think my ring size would change because I weighed only about 10 pounds more than this when I was in my teens, and my ring size was a 6 then, but I think my body fat is the lowest it's ever been in adulthood, so I guess my fingers slimmed out. I haven't been through winter yet, so hopefully my fingers don't shrink in the winter, or my e-ring isn't going to fit!

My solution to the changing ring size was to not get any rings until I was done losing weight-- I know that's probably not a very attractive suggestion though. I would not have thought my ring size would change, though, and it changed a lot! So I wanted to share my experience. Perhaps you should try and stick to ring styles that can be re-sized if necessary, for the time being?

Ugh! I can't believe I said "to" instead of "too." I know I'm calling attention to it by posting, but I feel a burning need to let you all know that I really meant "too big," because to/too/two mistakes drive me insane!
