Hello all,

so after picking out a stone, all that was left was getting a ring size from my GF. I'm on night shift so it's a bit complicated. I had her coworker get it from her today using a sizer the jeweler (GOG) gave me.

As soon as the friend texted me that it was a "4" i was on the phone to the jeweler. Sure enough, my GF even came home a few hours later still wearing the thing on her finger!

Just a little bit ago she mentioned that now it is too tight and she is "probably a 4.25 really - must have been the AC at work."

The ring has pave diamonds from 9oclock to 3 oclock (half of the ring). I know that resizing it can be a little risky with pave stones.

I need to call GOG the second they open tomorrow morning to make a correction but wondering if I should go to 4.25 or 4.5 just to be safe. If I go too big will this thing fall off her finger all winter and not be able to show off to her friends over the holidays?

Love any input. Thanks!

I would at least go to 4.25. Too big is better than too small because sizing beads can be put in if too big. But realize that even if it is a little loose in the winter, it will be tighter in the summer. And it will fit tighter once she is wearing a wedding band with it. So by all means go to 4.25 and I personally might go to 4.5 if she thinks 4 is tight in cool weather.

She was a 4 at work...where it's AC. She thinks she is a 4.25 at home where its about 70 on the thermostat now. I can't really display any urgency about this when she has no idea i've actually already bought a ring. I know it's better to be too big than too small and that's why I'm worried that maybe I should do 4.5 instead of the 4.25 she just mentioned.

Will the ring be unwearable for the winter holiday season if it's a quarter too big (if i went with 4.5 instead of 4.25 and end up being wrong) or will it only take us a second to get an easy fix for that? I've gotta call GOG in less than 12 hours when they open.

She can absolutely wear it if it is a quarter too big! The thing I worry about is if 4.25 is just right in cool weather, then it could be just a bit tight in hot weather and worn with a wedding band. Maybe tell them 4 3/8ths and split the difference!

Then if she says it is a little loose, remind her that it will be tighter in hot weather and when worn with another band. There are little plastic things you can get to put on the back temporarily if it is really too loose and sizing beads can be added if it is still too loose in the summer.

I'm a 4.25 and a 4.5 is definitely wearable in a pinch. It might slip over her knuckle a bit easily or spin around her finger but at least she can enjoy it for the holidays and get it sized in January if she's finding it too big.

I'm a 5.25 but my eternity and e-ring are 5.5 and they fit perfect when it's hot out and are a bit loose when it's cold. I've debated putting in sizing beads for when it's cold. Sounds like a 4.25 would be perfect.

I'd wait and get it sized with her in order to do it once, and do it right.

I'm a 4.25. 4.00 is too tight and 4.5 too loose. Don't forget a ring, that is slightly too loose can fit better once a wedding ring is added. The two rings combined seem to hold each other in place.

I would go with 4.25 - that's what I wear, and a 4 would be too snug and a 4.5 would be too loose. Also, it's the size she suggested!

This is what my thoughts are as well. Especially if the 4.0 fit at work, I don't want to go so loose that at work, where she will spend the first several months of being excitedly engaged, it is annoyingly loose. A 4.25 will still be close to what she liked when she wore it at work today (a 4) and, like you said, I can't be "blamed" if she's the one who told me her size : )

I checked with the jeweler a few days earlier and the ring is resizable. In summer time we can see where it stands.

This morning I watched as she went to the dresser and tried to put on the size 4 again and went "Owwww" and gave up. Now I'm leaning more towards the 4.5 instead of .25.

First thing in the morning, most people have puffy fingers and that swelling usually decreases as the day goes on --- MOST PEOPLE! Also, if she stands a lot at work, usually gravity increases the puffiness as well.

I think you may be fine with the 4.25 but I like the idea of the 4-3/8 size - I think DS suggested that - the compromise between the 2 siZes seems like a practical solution to me.

Good luck!

Go with 4.5 then because there's summer time swelling, morning swelling and hormonal swelling. A little loose is better than tight, as you've noticed.

Because the jeweler said I can get this ring resized, I don't mind the drive there, etc, my main concern is just that the ring will go on (so don't want to be too small) but I do have one last question to put my worries to bed.

Suppose she really is a 4.25, will the 4.5 be so loose that like, at Thanksgiving dinner a few days after proposal, the ring is going to be sitting there diamond-side-down and flopping all over? I really have no idea how sensitive this kind of thing is. Sounds like I get an opportunity to look silly no matter which option I go with, but "too tight to put on at all" is clearly worst case so the 4's not an option lol.

.5 out of 4 seems like it will be a bigger difference (percentage of size change and relative looseness) than than say, .5 out of 7.

My ring size is 5.5. That is a comfortable size for me and my rings are never too tight in the morning or in the summer. But I purposely sized my new e-ring setting 5.75 because when wearing it with the wedding band, I like it to NOT feel snug. If she is getting up with a ring that is tight enough to say "ouch", then she probably needs it sized 4.5. It will not be terribly loose, but it will be a little loose through the winter wearing it alone. In the summer and with a wedding band it will fit just right. This is the way it is with rings. Part of the year they are a little loose and part of the year they fit well. That is much better than having them too tight ever! I would not size and resize a ring with diamonds on the shank. I'd rather it be a little large and put sizing beads in because they can be removed easily without hurting the shank. But as others have said, 4 3/8 is your other option since it is a little over the 4.25 that we know for sure she needs.

Oh, and I can also wear my right hand rings that are a size 6 on my left ring finger. They are a little loose but do not fall off. So it's not like there is a huge difference.

Id talk to Marie/Jon/Sarah but go with a 4.5 to be safe, or a 4.5 tight which is like between a 4.25 and a 4.5. That way she has wiggle room, and you're not concerned. Her ring size WILL fluctuate with seasons AND within the day. And when you get married and she has a 2nd ring on it will fit tighter as well.

I have mine sized to fit my knuckle, which is a full size + bigger than my finger is, and right now my knuckles are a little closer to a six (*cries* i hate getting older) with sizing beads in almost every case, not my finger, and even then I can't get mine on for a couple hours in the mornings bec Im swollen and puffy and the joints just can't do it.

This was my exact issue when trying to decide on a ring size. At first, a 4 felt good. The next time I tried it (in the morning) it was way too tight. We almost went with a 4.25, but ended up getting a 4.5 instead. At times, it feels a little loose. However, in trying on wedding bands with my ER, it is the perfect size.

Well, it's ordered and funds are wired for the 4.5 : ) At least I know it'll go ON! I'm gonna start stressing about stuff that matters now - like how the hell am I going to pull off this surprise proposal, and what am I going to say to her parents beforehand?? - and the ring sizing will get taken care of in due time, together with the person who has to wear the thing on her finger!!!!
