Ring Size - letters v Numbers

Would anyone happened to know if there is a way of converting letter ring sizes to number ring sizes?

here in Australia they use letters, but I know in the states (or I believe) they use numbers.

I thought I was a size 6, and then when I got my ring I found it was too big - I had to get it re-sized in australia, and I was told I am a J 1/2 does anyone know what this transfers to in numbers?

I am looking to get a diamond claw setting eternity band for my wedding band and want to be able to give our jewellers overseas the correct size.
