ring size changing?

Hi everyone.

My girlfriend and I have been trying to determine what size ring fits her best. At first it was 7.5 that fit the best. She's not overweight, just has big hands and long fingers. She's tried a 7 a few weeks ago and surprisngly fit perfectly and 7.5 was quite loose. Now she feels 7 might be too tight. Hopefully we can go to the mall today and have her size her finger again.

Is this common? Any of you ladies have this problem?

Also can vendors size in 1/8 increments? (We were maybe thinking 7 1/8).

I have a few days to give the ring size to start building my ring and I really want to get it right the first time around. ;(

Yap, it is possible to get 1/4 size in rings.

Finger size change with time and temperature even in the same day, so variation is common.

I have gotten different results at different stores. I have been anywhere from a 4 to a 5.

One store sized me at a 4.5 (which I originally thought I was), and then one said I was 4. I really think that they were off, though. They claimed it was hot in the store, but we had been in there for three hours, and it was getting late. I started getting really hungry and shaky (I can't skip meals because I'm hypoglycemic), and as a result, I started feeling really cold. The 4 was even tight and difficult to get off then.

The next store claimed that I was a 5, but it seemed a bit loose (in this store, I was at a normal temperature). They offered the 4 to me, but I didn't think I would be able to get it off if I tried it on. I decided to get a 4.5.

Weirdly enough, my right hand ring finger is also a 4.5 (was sized for my class ring), and they say that the left side is generally smaller if you are right-handed (which I am). I probably could have gone with a 4.25 for my engagement ring, but the store that we worked with only did half sizes, although many do quarter sizes. I'm sure that ours could too, if it turned out to be necessary.

I've heard other women say that they had the same problem - they seem to be slightly different sizes at different stores, and on different days.

Luckily, we did got a simple platinum solitaire, so it should be easy to re-size in the future, if needed.

Side question: how long does it take to have a ring re-sized? Assuming that it is a simple, thin platinum band. I was just wondering if this is something that they could do in a few hours.

I found that it is very difficult to use ring sizers to find a size. Depending on the width of the ring and the style (comfort fit for example) I've worn anything from a 6 1/4 to 7 1/2. I take my rings to a local jeweler who can do almost anything the same day.

I think of myself as a 5.5 because that's my e-ring ... but in winter, it's loose enough that I have to stack it with a ring or two to keep from losing it, and in summer, I have to leave my eternity bands off altogether if I want to avoid sausage fingers. Most of the time, though, I'm within the bounds of comfort with the 5.5 e-ring and a 5 band.

Might I make a suggestion? As opposed to giving yourself the hassle of trundling back and forth between jewelry stores to see what your GF's ring size is as different times, why don't you buy a cheapie silver band in the size that you think it closest, and see if it wears comfortably over the next few weeks? Alternately, if she already has any rings in rotation, having one of *them* sized might be the easiest solution of all.

I find that during the summer my Ering fits perfectly....except when its EXTREME heat and my fingers really swell and it still fits but it is a bit tight to wiggle off. BUT in the winter, I feel that my size 5 is a bit on the loose end. So I feel I really can't go bigger or smaller because it would definitely be too small in summer or too big in winter. 5 was the happy medium...

size note- do people typically get their w band the same size or bigger figuring with 2 rings its a tighter fit as a whole?

Thanks everyone.

Circe thanks for the suggestion. We are going to the mall soon and she's going to purchase a cheap silver band to try out. I'm thinking 7 1/4 might be a happy medium for her, but we will see.

Good luck. :)

I'm having the same problem - the first time the gf got sized she was a 4 1/2, so I asked her to get a second opinion, which came back as a 5 1/2. So naturally I asked her to get a third opinion, as it's impossible to tell which of these is correct. Now she's a 5, too.

She is saying get a 5, but if a ring does need resizing is it easier to get it enlarged or reduced for the perfect fit?

I guess it's different if someone is trying to find out their gf's ring size secretly, but if the gf is aware of the process then I really recommend buying a couple of silver rings (ideally about the same width as your intended ering or wring) and wearing them for a few days.

We did exactly this because I really *hate* even slightly tight rings but I also wear a large ring size... so whenever we'd go in to a store and be sized, they'd try and tell me I was anything up to a size and a half smaller than I was comfortable wearing.

I bought a few silver bands in 3mm (the thinnest width I could get with that vendor) and also in 5mm for my bf. We've worked out which one we each like and are wearing them each night for a while, to see how they go. My fingers definitely swell overnight so I wanted to see what size would still be comfortable in the morning. I also wanted to try wearing them in the cold, as well as in the upcoming summer. Having a couple of different sizes on hand to try at different times/situations has really helped work out what size I am comfortable with.

I *think* it depends on the setting firstly - ie whether there are any melee or side diamonds whose prongs could be affected? And in that case I believe downsizing requires more checking to ensure the prongs still secure the stones properly. I am sure someone more knowledgeable will also chime in soon, however. :D

as far as buying bands goes...I would then take the band that fits to the jeweler, so they can size it the same as the band. I bought some bands in a size 5 to see what width I liked, if I liked comfort fit...they fit and then I ordered my ering in a size 5, and it is too big.

I think buying a silver band and getting one that fits perfectly, THEN send that ring to the jeweler and say "Make it this size!" is the best practice. Jewelers vary in their measuring method and so sending a ring along that is perfect is the simplest.

Thanks for the input guys. We went to a Tiffany's and 7 seems to be the best fit, but then again they did not have a 7 1/4, only 7 1/2 to cmpare. She said the 7 fits comfortably and she was neither cold or hot. It's wierd because she is right handed and her right hand can fit a 6 very comfortably, which isn't even as tight as the 7 on her left....

The person helping us at Tiffany's said of course a perfect fit would be best, but people mostly get slightly smaller then slightly bigger due to the risk of losing it unless you use sizing beads...

We didn't check for places to find some thin silver bands, but maybe tomorrow if we get the chance.

Also if we did not pick the perfect fit does resizing slightly up or down mess up the integrity and durability of the ring? Is it better to resize up or down? The setting is a 2 mm width pave with 4 prong head.

Thank you all again.

My now FI also recently had to get her finger sized. The first time around, we couldn't get a consistent response from 4 different B & M's. She was anywhere from a 3.5 to a 4.25. We decided to go to the mall again the following week. We live in Canada so we went to Tiffany's, Birks, Spence, all reputable vendors. Tiffany's and Birks both sized her at 3.5 as 4 was too loose. They only had 0.5 increments. We also went to Spence which had 1/4 sizes. The 3.75 fit but it was just a little easier to take off compared to the 3.5.

Since it's currently summer here, and fingers tend to swell more in the heat, we decided that 3.5 would be the best choice. We just got the ring from WF yesterday and it fits like a charm.

In your case, I would definitely lean towards a 7. However, if you could find another store that has 1/4 sizes, it's definitely worth going since PS vendors do sell in 1/4 sizes and a 6.75 (or 7.25) might fit better. You won't know unless you try it on. I would also suggest trying on rings when it's hot out, get sized right away (don't let the A/C cool you down) and choose the size with the snuggest fit. That way you know the ring will always fit, but you minimize as much as you can the looseness during the winter months.

Sizing down is always easier (I think) but if you're getting a pave, you definitely just want to get it right the first time. Take the time to go to reputable B & M's. You can even go to Tiffany's on different days or at different times of day, and keep in mind how hot it is. 2mm is quite standard and should not make a difference between how the ring sizer and the actual ring fits.

I get quite a fluctuation in my ring size. She should probably get an inexpensive ring in a few different sizes and see what fits in different environments and several days of wear to determine her size. The problem with the jewelry store sizer is they only have half sizes and when you put them on they are cold and only wear them briefly, metal expands as it warms so it feels looser after several minutes of wear. I go anywhere from 3.5 (if I'm cold) to 5.5 (if I'm jogging on a hot day) but usually get my rings sized to 4.25 which is consistently comfy, she needs to find that spot for her. My e-ring is 4 3/8 (so it can be done) and sometimes it spins and sometimes it's snug.

Do you guys know what retail stores would sell thin silver bands in 1/4 increments?

Come to the land down under (or UK) where we use the alhapet and there are 2.6times more sizes, and then we do 1/4's and even 'firm' or 'tight'.

The difference between a size on a hot humid day and a cool day is a lot
