I have recently asked WF to build a custom ring. They suggested I take my girlfriend to Tiffany''s to have her finger sized since WF and Tiffany use the same standard of measurement. While I was there the Tiffany rep. told me an interesting fact. She mentioned that all Tiffany rings are made size 6. Then once purchased they are sized to your specs.

Does anyone know if this is standard practice in the industry? Are custom rings made from a wax also a certain size or do they make the wax the right size to start?

Just my curiosity about ring making.

very interesting about Tiffany's and it sounds really strange that they said they make everything in a size 6

anyway, WF will make the ring in the proper size so make sure you give her exact size to WF.

ETA: there is just no way Tiffany's can make all rings in a 6 and size them. there are pave settings that just can't be sized very much and must be made in the proper size and their deco setting could never be sized up or down 3-4 sizes...i don't think the rep. knows what they are talking about.

I''m not sure about every custom ring, but my custom ring that started from scratch with CADs was made in my size. However, with tiffany''s since the rings are not custom made, but rather modified...it makes sense that they wouldn''t want to create a whole bunch of size 4 rings and then have nobody buy them. As far as getting her ring size, pretty much any jeweler should be able to size her finger. I can''t imagine that the sizes would differ very much from store to store. Anyone want to correct me on this? Is there going to be a large difference between a tiffany''s size 6, kay jewelers size 6, and a mom & pop size 6??

different jewelers can have different sizes. I ordered one ring in a 3.5 from Quest and Pearlmans measured it as a 3 1/4. i also had a 3.5 plus made by WF that measured a 3.5. So, if WF says Tiffany''s uses the same standard then I''d go with that.

Tiffany does sell rings in different sizes, this I know for a fact. But those rings are mostly eternity bands and other multi stone rings. I do believe that all the solitare rings in the traditional Tiff setting are at size 6 in the store. I think it is the weirdest thing. Not very "custom" considering what you are paying them for. Last time I was there, she pulled a size 5 eternity band out for me to try. .

most jewelers store stock size 6 or 6 1/2 rings b/c it's the most common ring size for women. they will size a ring if you purchase it out of their case and it can be sized without damaging the integrity of the ring. maybe that's what the lady at the Tiffany's meant? that would make a little more sense.

When we were first looking at rings they told me the same thing at Tiffany''s. But they did happen to have one there that was bigger, and I was able to walk out with it. Also, they said that you could order a ring from them in any size you want. I doubt those were all made to a 6 and then resized...

Wow, interesting! I figured there was a standard ring set that jewelers use...well there should be LOL! I guess then if a tiffanys is near by then it would be best to go that route.

I''ve been to Tiffany''s and tried on eternity and wedding bands and she asked me my size and pulled out a 5 1/2 for me to try on. My tendency is to think that sales rep either was mistaken or said it in a way it was misconstrued.

Every ring a size 6 sounded odd to me too. I agree that it would not make much sense in pave etc. The size 6 scenario just makes me think they pump these things out by the truck load. I guess that is what you have to do when you have so many stores.
