Ring setting: What is this metal “thing”?

Hi can anyone tell me what this metal bar thing is and if there is a purpose for this metal bar? Doesn’t it block more light from entering the stone? Would a ring setting be better with or without this bar? Thanks!

That is the “under bezel” or probably has many other names, but either way, it gives structure and support to the prongs.

no, it doesn’t block any substantial amount of light from the stone, and it makes the ring a lot stronger.

@kb1gra is correct, it adds support to the prongs, making the prongs much more capable of securely holding the gem. The vast majority of the light being enjoyed by the viewer of the gem comes from light that has entered the top of the diamond.
