Ring Price question

I have a diamond with the following GIA report. The diamond kind of looks flat to me and they want me to pay $18407.

Does this sound right?

Is it a square emerald cut or is it supposed to be an Asscher cut diamond - which is referred to as a square emerald cut diamond by the GIA because they don't want to find themselves in the middle of a potential trademark dispute even though the term Asscher has become common use here in the U.S.

If the diamond is an Asscher, the total depth is shallower than we prefer. It is likely that the concentric squares in the center of the diamond will not be evenly spaced, nor aligned properly, but the only way to determine this for sure is to actually see the stone which obviously we haven't.

What do you mean? Shallow crown (menaing there is little stone above the girdle, so the diamond would just show a "flat" surface when mounted), lack of sparkle?

Usually emerald cuts would be deeper than that, and at leats some standards (such as the AGA's that you can find down the "fancy shapes" tutorial here) recommend 60-65% depth.

By tradition, asschers are a deeper cut breed of square step cuts. It is hard to say exactly why those unbranded square emeralds that are presented as generic asscher cuts would usually be deeper (say, around 70%) - this is both in line with what one woudl expect from an "Asscher" and common for square or rectangular Emerald cuts anyway.

Why would this even matter? If the stone did not look good enough, pass... there is plenty to choose from

It is supposed to be an asscher cut and when I say flat I meant shallow. It seems to be not very deep and this being the first diamond I have ever bought that is what I am seeing.

So... the "bottom" of the diamond never shows when set and most people would want their diamonds brilliant, but not overly deep (since that extra depth makes them smaller than a less deep diamond of same weight and price). Why is "shallow"-ness a factor otherwise?
