Ring pic, arrival, and what to do with it before engagement?

BOTH my and my fiance-to-be's engagement rings were finally completed and mailed today! They will arrive at our house tomorrow (7/27) by 3pm...

This is a planned, mutual engagement, we're both getting rings, and we were both involved in the selection and design, etc. We're leaving for our engagement trip on the morning of 7/31, so the rings will be in our possession before we can each officially "have" them... and I don't know what we should do with them!

Even if we could stand the anticipation, I'm not sure it is the best idea for us to not let each other see our own until our official engagement because I may want to make a small modification to mine.

Since it's much easier to "subtract" platinum than it is to add it, there might be a little more metal on mine than I'd like, but I'm pretty sure I can take it to a local goldsmith to get that fixed up quickly. I'd really like it to be the final finished product before our trip because I'm sure I'll want to stare at it and take hundreds of pics while we're there.

So should we let each other see the rings?! If so, do we then hide them again until engagement?

For a sneak peak, here is a pic the jeweler sent me of my ring right before she shipped it today! (It may or may not be the final product... I might want the edges of the prongs rounded more and/or the tops of the prongs made smaller.)

This is a custom-designed platinum ring, NESW 4-prong "twist" solitaire, size 3.5. Stone is a 1.52 F VS2 H&A round diamond.

I would have a look to make sure they are both as you wish and I would be sure to insure them IMMEDIATELY. I have Jeweler's Mutual as do many others.

One thing I'll say about going to a local jeweler to have modifications done - I don't recommend it. It will likely mean you have absolutely no recourse with the original jeweler should something go wrong or come up in the future.

Definitely. His is already insured with Jeweler's Mutual because it was less than $5000 so they were able to use just the receipt, but mine is not because I wasn't able to get a full appraisal until it was completed today. I will be faxing them the appraisal I receive with the ring tomorrow to add mine to the policy.

Thanks for the advice about modifications made by local jewelers. In that case, I'm not really sure what I should do because I live in North Carolina, and the jeweler is in Chicago. The only modifications I might want would be a minor smoothing of the metal, and it would suck to have to pay for postal-insurance both ways and be without the ring for something so small. So I guess what this means is that it's not worth making a change, and I should hope I'm happy with it as is?
