Ring Paranoia

Hi Everyone

I’ve been lurking around here for a while and finally decided to post. Last weekend I received my e-ring (yay!) but have been having some trouble adjusting to wearing it. I’m overly paranoid that I’ll scratch/chip the diamond – and am constant checking it for damage. Was anyone else this nervous when they first got their ring? And how sturdy are these things anyway (I have a RB in platinum six prong)? I guess I’m just wondering how cautious I should actually be before I drive myself nuts!

I just got my ring last week as well. I''m also a bit paranoid and over-critical...partially because it needs to be resized but you are definitely not alone! A few weeks ago there was a thread about whether or not to wear your rings at the beach. Several people mentioned that you have the ring to enjoy it... things are going to happen regardless of how well you try to protect it. I realized these people were right so while I am still nervous and crazy at times I try to remember that nothing is perfect but I can still love it, enjoy it and be happy.

It''s completely a common thing to be paranoid about protecting your new ring! I remember checking for smudges throughout the day to make sure there wasn''t a big ole fingerprint smack on the table of my stone. And I used to freak out every time my hand hit the handlebar of the elliptical trainer at the gym. But that will wear off.

These things are very strong and sturdy...with a 6 prong solitaire in platinum you could practically break off a prong and the diamond would still be in the ring. Also, the only thing that''s going to scratch your diamond is...another diamond. The thing I would be cautious about is smacking that ring into something hard. And I mean smacking it. Hard. Diamonds can and will chip if struck hard and in just the right place. So while it''s unlikely to happen, just know that it is possible, and try not to go wailing on that thing. But otherwise, enjoy it and live your life! The ring will be fine!

It may interest you to know that cflutist (you can look her up) had her hand slammed in a door once and her 2+ct oval popped out of her ring when a prong was bent out of shape. It was a 4-prong setting in yg I think. Anyways, her diamond was fine despite being slammed in the door and just had to be reset. Short story can be found HERE.

I''m not careful at all with my hands. I cracked the gold band on my original solitaire but the diamond and head were never hurt. (I don''t know how I cracked the band, it just had a large crack through it shortly after I got it!)

Also, if you are not used to wearing rings, especially on your left ring finger with a big ole RB sitting pretty high, it might take a little bit for you to get used to it. When I first received my ring, I kept banging it all around and each time had to make sure I didn''t do any damage! But after a short while, you will find that you start to unconsciously accommodate for the ring and all that banging around should stop for the most part!

Thank you everyone for your responses. I''m already starting to feel much better about wearing it (and dropping it!) It''s not a big diamond, or even set high up... it just seems like now that it''s on my hand I''m banging it into everything! It''s good to know that I''ll learn to accommodate for it.

Unfortunately, I don''t have it insured yet. I wanted to do some more reading on the forums before I contacted an insurance company (most people seem to be interested in Chubb).
