Hi,
I am looking for some suggestions for an engagement ring for my girlfriend. I have a modest budget of $2000. I asked my girlfriend what kind of ring she wants and she said anything which looks good.

I have no knowledge when it comes to diamond rings and a few friends of mine suggested I post on this forum to get some recommendations as to what ring to purchase.
I have looked at a few rings from Costco for example
First
Second
Price is a little over my budget but I can make an exception for an extra $500 if I am getting a good deal.
My girlfriend has a ring size of 4.5

I would greatly appreciate all the help I can get as I am kind of lost.

Glad you found this forum! There are a ton of helpful people here! I'm not by an stretch of the imagination an expert, but I think more information will help draw in the true prosumers here haha. What does she like?

Cut: Princess or round or other? Guessing princess based on the posted, but want to make sure.

What sort of ring are you looking for- solitaire, pave (side diamonds), three stone, etc?

How do you feel about color and clarity- what's the lowest you'd accept?

It's totally ok not to have answers haha, but knowing that will give us a starting point.

Tell us more about your girlfriend. What style of clothes does she wear? Does she generally like modern? Vintage? Rustic? Tradional? Does she work with her hands? My first reaction is to recommend vintage because you can get something unique and different for your budget, however the links you posted were for modern rings. Does she wear more yellow gold or white gold? Give us a better idea about her and we can make recommendations.

This is being sold pre-loved and is under budget, $1,425, http://loupetroop.com/listings/bands/beautiful-0-dot-45-princess-cut-solitaire-see-pics-and-videos If interested, it'd be worth asking further details about the centre diamond, if there are reports for it, where it was purchased, etc.

It's my understanding that princess cuts are harder because they aren't by the numbers. And I think you can get a very nice ring for $2,000. I'm mostly just offering encouragement, but I like the looks of this diamond, http://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/princess-cut/0.55-carat-i-color-vvs2-clarity-sku-439075 and with settings like these you'd stay on budget or pretty close

Another option, one that I normally discourage but think it works for princesses, would be to be spend more money on the diamond, purchase a sleeker more simple setting, and then get a diamond wedding ring later. There are some great solitaire settings for $700 and less and I love the look of a simple princess solitaire with a diamond band.

This seems right up your alley Niel! You are gifted at finding amazing bling within budget!! Actually...waaaaaait a minute! Niel, what about your marquise??!! Hopefully, you don't mind me referencing your loupetroop ad:

This is an AMAZING ring, large sparkly diamond...I would be ALL OVER IT if I didn't already have an erring! Heck, if I had the money, this would be mine already!

IMO, for someone who doesn't know what they are looking for specifically, I would get the best diamond you can get for your money and then go for a very simple setting. The setting selection is very personal...a very simple 14 gold setting can sometime even be included with the diamond depending on where you get the diamond from. If not, and if you don't mind something pre-loved, you can get something second hand and have it polished up so it is as good as brand new.

As I said, focus more on getting the prettiest diamond ever within your budget. OR you could spend all the 2000$ on the diamond and present to her with a promise to work together with her designing the setting of her dreams...

Another idea for your budget is to go for a 3 or 5 stone ring. That means each diamond is smaller (compared to having only a single one on the ring), but it could make up for it by having more finger coverage. 3 or 5 smaller but great quality diamonds on a ring could look substantial on a size 4.5 finger! I purchased a preloved antique 5 stone diamond ring...the total carat weight of all 5 diamonds is about 1ct but I tell you, it's it very sparkly!!!...and the ring cost me less than 800$!!

Niel, I love that ring! I have love it since I first saw it! It makes my heart skip a beat!
