Ring idea -- Thoughts? Is this stupid?

Bear with me, please. You all have such awesome collections, and here I am just starting out. I got into buying gemstones just last fall and have only begin to set stones. My first project is actually at the jewelers right now -- tiny pink spinel being set into an LOGR halo... which the jewelers bashed quite rudely (but more about that later....).

I have an 8mm color shift pink/peach tourmaline I'm thinking of setting with 6mm aqua cushion sidestones in a JKT setting, size 5.5 middle finger. See pics below. Does this look stupid? Are the side stones too large? I'm confused because I've never been a bezel gal, and I've never been into 3-stones, either.... Please give me some honest feedback. I've looked at the eyecandy threads as well as the Etsy "sold" sections to narrow things down a bit, but I'm still pretty green -- And I apologize for the terrible (nighttime) pics, lol.

First off, to have all 3 stones together is a LOT of finger real estate. Are you comfortable with such a statement piece? I think the stone sizes are fine. It's a strong 3 stone look, not center stone with small accents. I find the kite-set sides work better because it looks rounder that way, compared to the traditional setup because you can clearly see the difference in shape and it doesn't flow as well. Secondly, colour combinations is an intensely personal choice. What one thinks is perfect might be another person's strange. I think this can work if you like it and select the right metal colour. If you are not a bezel person, do not consider bezels for this project.

I like the color combination a lot.
I agree with Chrono about the ring being large. It's like 20mm just with the stones (not counting any metal in between or on the sides if you do bezels).
It's really down to your preference but I feel it would be too large for me on my finger (middle finger size 6).

I also think smaller aquas would look better and more balanced to my eye. I still do love the colors though!

I really like the color combo as well, but also think its probably too big for a ring. But what about making it a necklace and setting the two aquas in the kite orientation but just fractionally higher than the tourmaline (to make a shallow triangle). I think that could be really stunning.

I don't think it is stupid, the crystals are very beautiful, it would be very gorgeous.

I'm really sorry but I don't like the colour combination - but that's totally a preference and if you love them together then that's all that matters. What I do like is the size of the gemstones together but I don't think you should be bezelling them. This will not only make the ring look a lot wider it MAY also look bulky. If you want a bulky heavy look then that will be fine. If you were hoping for a more delicate look, I'd use prongs instead.

One thing I want to ask you is what metal colour you're going for? With colour shifters, finding the right metal colour is a nightmare BUT because your central stone is warm in tone, I would think about yellow or rose gold. The colour I wouldn't use for this is white gold or silver because it will make the ring look very cold and I'm worried about what it would do to the central stone's "look" in all lighting conditions. Have you placed all 3 stones by different metals to test this out? If you are wanting to keep cost down you could perhaps use yellow or rose gold for the central head but then silver for the rest of the ring.

Maybe it's the pictures. On this end the peach/pink looks brown/orange.

A size 5.5 finger has a diameter of 16.1mm and a circumference of 50.3mm. Let's also consider that the stones should take, at the most, around a third of the circumference, so you can close your fingers. That would leave you with around 16.8mm to play with. So, to make the ring work, it would have to be higher, in order to have a larger outer circumference while still fitting your finger.

Personally, I think it would end up quite bulky.

Not stupid at all!!! I personally love the color combo. I have started mixing colored stones in my rings too. I do agree that the aquas are a little too large for the tourmaline. I like the shape difference and having the aquas kite set. I wouldn't bezel, I'd use prongs. Rose gold would be lovely. Have fun!!!

Chrono , Agneau, Lady Disdain- I didn't think I'd like the colors, but I quite like the soft pastel effect going on here. You're right about real estate, though... The specific mm measurement really helped, thanks Lady Disdain. I think I'm trying to force it to work because I want to use these aquas in a project.

Theelms - I really love that pendant idea! Will have to play around with sketching that. I never think to design necklaces, for some reason.

LD- I was leaning toward rose gold, though could it make the center stone look washed out?

airplay - Sorry the pics are so bad! The tourm is more pink in natural light, but can go coppery indoors -- not quite as brown as what I'm seeing in these pics. Need to get some daytime pics.

No - rose gold looks good with most pinks/peaches and even browns. It will enhance the warmth. It definitely wouldn't wash the centre stone out and would probably have the opposite effect. What it would do to the side Aquas I don't know. I presume it would clash too much and look a bit odd. Personally I wouldn't use rose gold with them - hence my suggestion of mixed metals.

Tourmalines often go copper/brown in incandescent lighting and this is why I really can't imagine that colour with the pale blue Aquas. Are you sure this will work?

Depending on the hue of the pink, sometimes I've seen rose gold make it look browner. How about doing the "ultimate" test? Very professionally done at home too. Lay the stone(s) in question on a copper penny and you'll have your answer. If you have a yellow gold necklace, lay your stones in it where the necklace is a bunched up nest. See which one compliments the stones best.
