My bf and I both know nothing about jewelry and diamonds.

He got me this ring from Robbins Bros three weeks ago. The ring he got is too big for me(a size 8) and we were trying to do an exchange today.

The salesperson said we should just do the sizing since we need to wait 4 to 5 weeks if we wanna exchange the size for the same ring. After she measured my size, she said it is not good to size the ring down from 8 to 5 3/4 for this style. She then got another ring of the same style in size 6.5 asking us to do an even exchange. My bf asked her if it is exactly the same ring but in different size. She said they are in same style and same quality. So we agreed for the exchange and left the store.

However, later my bf found on the receipt saying the diamond of the original size 8 ring is .40Ct and the new ring is .42Ct...is the quality really the same? If yes, how come the carat of the new ring is .2 more than the original one.....my bf was so worry. This is the first ring he got me and he didn''t know if he got ripped off or not. All we know from the receipt is .42ct.

Here is the price my bf paid forthe original ring,

$1495 + $75(5 yr jewelry service policy, do we really need this?) + $123.34 tax = $1693.34

Is it normal to do even exchange for diamond ring in same style but different size? Is this ring worth $1693.34 including tax and the 5 yr service policy? We don''t know anything about the diamonds. After searching the web for 6 hours, I understand it is not possible to tell the value of diamond ring based on the carat of the diamond only. But...does anyone purchase this ring from RB before? Please help...

Hi pp123 and welcome

. I would not worry about the exchange, it sounds like the jeweler had something in stock and wanted to keep you happy. The carat weight difference from .40 to .42 is very minimal and probably has little if any effect on the price. If you love the new ring as much as the one you traded back in, enjoy it and wear it in good health

I will try to help a little until better advice comes along and it can be a little quieter here weekends. I wouldn''t worry too much about the .2 carat weight difference. Many chain jewellers from what I understand can sell the same size diamond rings with center stone weights that can vary i.e. a 1 carat diamond can be between .95 and 1.10 carat weight and still be sold as a carat, so the 2 points shouldn''t be a problem and mean this new diamond is slightly heavier. What is the colour and clarity of the diamond? Are they the same with both diamonds, i.e VS1 H colour? This is what you need to ascertain when determining the " quality" of both. Are they certified by a reputable lab?

There is a lot of info that we PSers like to have when trying to help especially regarding cut quality, but you seem to like your ring, we could go a lot further into this but it seems at the moment you love the ring, but just want to make sure you got a deal. Hard for me to say as I am in the UK but if you love it then that is what matters. Regarding the service policy, again it depends on what is covered but you might want to look at insurance through Jewellers Mutual or Chubb as this might offer better protection.

I hope this helps a little until better advice chimes in for you.

Even if someone had purchased the same style of ring from Robbins Brothers, every diamond is different. The quality or value of their diamond wouldn''t tell us anything about the diamond/s in your ring.

I think the exchange part sounds fine & was reasonable (assuming the color grade & clarity grade was also the same ... do you know this? Did you get any other info about the stone?)

Do you love it and are just trying to make sure it''s not a "bad" deal?

p.s. - about the jewelry service contract, not familiar with those but I''d insure it under my own homeowners or renters insurance policy anyway.
