Hi everyone! Longtime reader, first time poster :)

I've been looking for an engagement ring for the future fiance, and BlueNile has been the only one so far that I've found a nice set. Platinum channel-set princess solitaire setting with channel-set princess band flush against the ring:

However it seems there isn't much love for BlueNile gems on this forum, due to the lack of Idealscope images and such.

Is it common to get the wedding set from one place and get a diamond from someplace else? And then go to a local jeweler to get it set? Or can I send in the ring to whomever I buy the stone from and they set it for me?

I don't think it's uncommon to get a setting from one vendor and the stone from another. You would usually get the stone set at the place you purchase the setting from though. However, I doubt BN will set someone else's loose stone so you're probably better taking the stone + setting to a local jeweler and getting it set there for a fee. You'll also need to get insurance on the stone before you get it set if you're not getting stone + setting from the same place.

I think you should find the stone first before you purchase the setting. The setting heads are designed to fit specific stone sizes, so you want to make sure you have an appropriate stone before you order the corresponding setting. Btw, I wasn't aware BN sold settings only. Do they allow this? I tried checking out with just a setting and no diamond and it wouldn't work for me. Maybe they'll allow it if you call in and order though.

There is a bias against BN on this forum because they don't provide IS images and pictures, but I think that if you're purchasing a round brilliant, you can get a good diamond on BN without that info provided that the diamond numbers check out.

I think its is quiet common, many people are buying the stones from the companies like B2C Jewels because prices are rock bottom
and if the setting they like elsewhere than they buy it there, the local jeweler can set the diamond for them however it would be
better if you could buy both at one store to avoid inconvenience.

Due to competition I am sure online companies can provide you value added service and and they will set the diamond for you as well.

Blue Nile won't sell their settings without their stone, IIRC.

Yes, that's correct.

Hi sakari_8, are you affiliated with B2C Jewels? I've noticed that about 80% of your posts seem to be recommendations for B2C.

Definitely do not buy settings from one online vendor and a stone from another unless one of the two is setting the stone. A local jeweler is unlikely to take responsibility for damage to the setting or diamond when they haven't sold either. Vendors such as Good Old Gold and Pearlman's carry probably 15+ brands of settings, and I can almost promise you they can find you a similar setting and you can buy the diamond there. WhiteFlash carries their own settings, Ritani, Vatche, and Verragio. I would not be inclined to want a BN ring setting anyway.

Yeah, this makes sense. I would take DS's advice.

Hi Sortman

I am not affiliated with B2C Jewels but I have purchased several diamonds from them in the past & due to there good prices and friendly
policies I like to recommend them.

Makes sense! That's like me and James Allen. Thanks for clarifying!

I think I'm going to get asked the same question soon about me and Blue Nile. I'm a loyal customer and have just upgraded my BN diamond studs. Their customer service is unbeatable and their diamond prices are low, while selling amazing stones, so I always stick up for them because they are not a popular PS vendor.

I have to agree with you about BN. I think it's perfectly ok to buy a beautiful round diamond based on a specific range of numbers. They have a very well run ops team too.
