The stone below is 1.6 ct, I-J, OEC. I like the looks of it, and would rather have a good price rather than a precisely graded stone. The stone is set in a nice piece of jewelry priced US$5,200. What should the stone alone cost? I fell for the look of it, so I'd rather get a second opinion before I rush cash out...

Thanks!

I'd be lying if I said I had any real idea, but just judging by the price I paid for my OMC, I'd say that the price, even for the stone alone, wouldn't be unreasonable.

Just how would you know if the price was good, if the stone weren't accurately graded? The price may or may not be good depending on the characteristics and condition of the stone.

If you are going to buy this diamond based on those pics, make sure you get a return period to determine if it was accurately represented.

I like OEC's and OMC's too, but I would want to know what I'm paying for without risking the $$ unnecessarily.

Good Luck!

Yeah, it is not all that bad. I dealt with the seller before, so I know that their return period is going to be respected all the way. Assuming the color is J, do you think the price would still make sense for say, SI1 clarity? enough questions now...

My OEC was graded (albeit by the London Precious Stone Lab not the GIA or AGS) and I felt happier knowing exactly what I was buying. Prices for OEC's are more problematic as it's much harder to compare prices. Look at websites that sell old cut stones and see what they are charging - they'll give you some guide as to what OEC's are going for.

You could ask Dave Atlas - he deals in OEC's, if I'm not mistaken.

They are an arm of whiteflash...and they sell alot of the old stones. They have an extensive search engine, so you can type in similar characteristics and I bet you will find a few stones that are similar specs. Then you can price compare to figure out what a good price would be for just the stone.

I put some specs in and only found one OEC...a 1.6c J VS that was $6100. I am not sure what the clarity grade is of this stone...but if its VS or even SI...you probably have a good deal if you offer $5000. Esp since this stone on the website was a J...yours may be more of an I ?

BTW that stone looks LOVELY...*drool*

As far as I know, the seller specializes in antiques and makes conservative estimates on his diamond's prices. The stone is in a rather nice 1920's broach, which comes with the diamond and the price above. The piece is far too big for most ususal occasions so it will receive another stone in the middle after the little sparkler gets onto my finger...
Can't wait to see the thing in my palm!
