Hello all -- I'm a newbie to this forum, but have been lurking for awhile. Anyway, my lovely engagement ring just arrived a couple days ago. It is 14k white gold (due to my own personal preference).
I wore it to work the other day and made a quick hand movement which brushed past a metal case corner. It wasn't a big impact, but I was worried that I may have scratched it. So I examined it under the light and there was a small scratch that went from top to bottom of the band. Could've been there before, not sure.
Nevertheless, being the perfectionist that I am I took it in to get cleaned. The lady also "lightly" polished it. I noticed after she buffed it, it looked more yellow and not as shiney. Keep in mind I've only had the ring for a couple of days. The scratch was also still there, albeit slightly less noticable.
I just have a few questions about maintaining this ring since I absolutely love it so much and want to make sure I do the right thing.
Should I wait for my scheduled rhodium dip to bring back the shine (I believe it's in 4 months with the warranty) or should I go back right away and have them do it? I was a bit surprised that a routine buff would make such a huge difference on the color. Also, is it harmful to buff or rhodium dip 14k gold "too much"? They told me twice a year was fine, but I just wanted another opinion. Thanks!!
