I looked at over 100 diamonds in person. I went to the very big luxury retailers like DeBeers and Graff as well as Harry Winston, Tiffany's, Cartier. I went to two small street level stores on 47th street. I then went to 6 "wholesalers" including a family relation. I even searched on the internet: blue nile, white flash, james allen, etc. I created an excel model to try and "predict" how much the stone should cost. I met with someone who is trying to even launch a new fund to buy diamonds as investments. I bought a light-scope, used the HCA tool, read incessantly on here, read a giant report by Bain consulting on the industry, kept posting silly question to y'all, etc. Well you get the point - I was getting neurotic, stressed, and everything started to blend together.
Ultimately it came down to Eternity and a wholesaler with a very fancy office. I spoke with Yoni and we looked at a couple stones (his office could be fancier but so what) and then the hurricane hit NY and I had the pleasure of a one week break from stone shopping (with no electricity and hot water of course).
I finally went with Eternity. Yoni provided a very good price for a GIA rated, 2.05ct, G, SI1 (eye clean and almost a VS2), 3EX stone, with an HCA of 0.7 that would make me happy. I must have gone to his office at least 5 times at this point. He was always patient and never pushed me. Never. That was my biggest gripe...this is a business filled with sleazy people (buy my jewelry for LOTS, sell your jewelry for PENNIES). He didn't bash another dealer's stone even though the others did that. I even spent a lot of time looking into Yoni's reviews and history (both on and off the internet). A couple of dealers started to hint that they were getting "tired" (who knew 2 visits and 3 emails does that); Yoni stuck it out through visits, calls, and emails.
I took it to David Wolf to have it appraised who liked the stone and thought it was a very fair price.
I haven't had the ring set yet and I will update the review once that's done. If you have any questions, feel free to ask but I looked the man in his eyes, shook his hand, and he did right by me when other guys were trying to do a hard sell or just not interested in investing too much time in me just in case the sale fell through. Thank you all for the time and the hand holding.
