So I''m applying for a job and it wants email addresses for my references. For one of my references I tried calling her to get hers and she hasn''t called back, I think she''s out of town.

What should I do, should I still include her but without an email address or do something else?

I would definitely include her, and if you have a contact tell him/her that you tried to call her to find out but she hasn''t got back, and you''ll give them that information when it becomes available.

I have been out of the job market for a while, but I wouldn''t want anyone giving out my email adress. I had always given my business phone number for friends to give to their prospective employers. Would they accept the reference''s phone number instead?

I would include her as a reference, but I would also include a notation on your resume, indicating "E-mail address to be provided." or something of that nature, so that it is clear to the hiring company that you did not simply forget to include it.

Have you exhausted all search options for trying to find it. If she is at a university, for example, you might be able to find her address on the school''s website. Some companies might include e-mail addresses on their websites.

I was going to recommend the same thing as Loves Vintage- if you "google" the person's name (and include the name of their place of business or town/state if it's a common name) you may be able to find his/her business email address posted online somewhere.

In terms of soocoo's concern, I think it's perfectly fine to provide someone's businiess email for reference purposes (what's the differnence between their business phone and email, especially if both are publically available?) but would not give out someone's persoal email wiithout their permission.

Good luck!

Thanks a lot for the suggestions. She''s retired, so I can''t look her up anywhere. I''ll just put a notation on my resume. I really appreciate the advice.
