resizing of ring before or after diamonds are set?

I have a 3 stone ring that needs to be resized the diamonds have not been set yet. My jeweler says it does not matter if the sizing is done before or after the diamonds are set. Also she said that it may get a little bigger after its polished,set etc. I would think that it might affect the setting if its sized after. Any thought on this ? thanks

I have a very similar question. My ring needed be sized from a 6 to a 5 after it was set and now the setting is very close to the sides of my fingers and uncomfortable. Does anyone think downsizing one full size is crazy? My fiancee told the jewelry my size and the jeweler said he'd prefer to give him a 6 and size it down later.
