Resizing: Normal to see where plat ring was resized?

Hi,

I have just received my plain plat wedding ring and I can see a tiny faint line where the ring was resized from a size L to a J1/2. The line is only visible from either side, and the view from the top and underneath show where it must have been polished because it is slightly darker than the surrounding metal.

My question is: is this normal? I wouldn't like it to suddenly give way because it hasn't been done properly! The story behind the ring is that it was advertised at less than half the normal price due to the jeweler shutting down his business and resizing was done for free. So I'm thinking it was done really quickly and without too much care. I only have this terrible webcam image of it as I don't have a camera with me atm. It's a 2.83mm wide plain platinum band, non-comfort fit and almost flat on top.

I'm not sure if what I think I'm seeing is an illusion or the actual resizing area. In the pic, I do see a very visible darker area that looks several mm wide. The metal being darker than the rest is NOT normal - I'm surprised they didn't repolishing the entire ring. And if the area affected is as large as it appears In the pic then I don't think that's normal either. How many sizes did you go up or down?

For a point of reference, I recently sized my ring half a size and I can't see where the work was done, at all. Mind you, my ring is gold and not plat but I don't think that should make a difference.

For peace of mind, I would take the ring to a reputable jeweller and get it looked at.

Eta: I see you had it sized down, maybe 1.5 sizes, I'm not sure about the euro sizing and how it compares to North American sizing.

That would be about 1 full American size down. I have a couple of platinum rings that I can see where they are resized, but they are both older rings where they have worn over time. If it were me I'd go to another jeweller and see if they can polish it up for you. I don't think it should be noticeable.

I'm also seeing the dark area in the pic and not sure if it's an illusion. I had my FIs ring sized from a 6 to 5 and when I took it to the appraiser he commented that they must have used a laser since the job was so good he could not even tall by looking at it. He stated that when they use a saw you can usually see the line at the bottom of the shank. His words not mine, but it made me feel a lot more confident in the jeweler. So i'm just guessing this is what your jeweler did since he was taking a loss anyway.

The picture is too blurry to make anything out other than the 2 rings. I've had work done where I cannot tell the ring has been resized and also where I can see a faint line (but cannot feel it). It is fixable and I would get it touched up to look seamless.

Thank you all for your feedback! I will take it into a jewelers when I'm in the city next. The marks are so tiny that the look doesn't bother me, it is more that I am concerned about the durability of it. Obviously it will be my wedding ring so I want it to last years.. and years... and years... hahaha :D

Just to clarify, the picture is so poor there is no way you could see the marks. It was more to demonstrate how simple the band is. Sorry I didn't say that in my initial posting!

I really hope it all turns out alright because I really love the look of this plain wedding ring with my ering! It was surprisingly hard to find one that looked good with it because of the sharp lines of the shank of the ering. If I had a massive centre stone then I'd love a little baguette band but I thought they distracted too much from my ering IMHO.
