My ring has always felt a little on the snug side but over the past year or so it has become too tight and consequently I have now got calluses on my knuckles from trying to get it on and off.
I took it too a local jeweler today. I have used this jeweler before for a few bits and pieces and I have been happy with the work and service.
My ring currently is a size 5.25. Ideally I wanted to go up to a size 5.5 but the jeweler said they don't do quarter sizes. They said they could do 5.75 and that they needed to take it for a few days, they said they needed to cut the band at the bottom and insert a small piece of platinum to make it bigger.
Does this all sound right?
I left it with them.. I didn't even take a piece of paper or anything. I got home and my husband went nuts. He said I should have waited and next time we went to the east coast (we live on the west coast) he would have got the person who made my ring to resize it or make a new setting. He said the setting itself only took an hour to make and that they shouldn't have needed to take the ring.
Now I am freaking out...
1. Will 5.75 be too big? They didn't have a size 5.75 ring in the store for me to try on, I tried on the metal rings and size 6 was too big, size 5.5 felt right but the jeweler said that our fingers go up and down half a size during the day and that 0.25 won't be enough difference.
2. Does it sound like they are going about it the right way? They said they are busy and one of their workers is not in this week and that's why it will take a few days.
3. I know what my husband says doesn't make sense as settings cost more than resizing even simple platinum ones but I am thinking it was a silly thing to do leaving an expensive ring without a reciept...
Now I am panicking :(

I think you should call and have them not do the work due to not being able to size it to your size. Go pick it up and call around to find some place that can do quarter sizes, or send it back to the jeweler who made it.

I recently inquired about having a ring resized (to make it smaller) and I was told that it would take a week, so the few days does not concern me. However, the jeweler having given you no paperwork would be very concerning to me. I do not want to alarm you, maybe this is common. Have you used this jeweler before?

Back in the late fall, I found an estate piece at a local jeweler that was having a going out of business sale and long story short it was to big. Being that they were closing in a few days they wouldn't resize. I took it to a jeweler by my home and they wouldn't resize it until I had an appraisal done on it. Also, they had forms to fill out in case it was damaged during the resize for their insurance. Apparently, they need to expose the setting to heat and it can damage the ring and there is always the potential of the stone suffering damage.

I would definitely call first thing in the morning, I will keep my fingers crossed for you.

Whenever I get anything more than a prong check done at my jeweler, I drop it off for a week, so I wouldn't be concerned about the time. It does sound like they're resizing it right - resizing up can require the insertion of more metal. I also agree with your jeweler that the quarter size wouldn't be enough - if you're literally getting callouses taking it off and on, go up half a size. The only potentially unusual thing is the lack of receipt or claim ticket - did they take down your name or anything to identify your ring as yours? Different jewelers do have different practices, and I've been places where they just take my name, places where they give me a claim ticket, and places where they take hi-def photos of my jewelry that go with the receipt/work order with a copy given to me and a copy kept there.

I think you ought to call and have them not take every necessary step due to not having the capacity to size it to your size. Go lift it up and call around to discover some place that can do quarter sizes, or send it back to the diamond setter who made it.

I also feel like a quarter size does not sound like enough if your ring is that tight. It should be a little loose in the winter and fit just right in the summer. It sounds like your right was too small at the outset and just became tighter, so I cannot see a quarter size doing much good. That would just take you back to too snug.

As far as the jeweler goes, I only choose very high end, reputable jewelers for any work on my rings because I hope they have the better benches working for them. So if this is not a well respected jeweler with high quality jewelry, I would also call and stop them from touching it. But I'd still size up a half size since it is not even summer yet. The only time I think it is absolutely essential or wise to have the maker do the sizing is when it is handforged (such as Victor Canera or Steven Kirsch) or if it has pave on the shank.

Thanks for the replies. It is a small town and the jeweler has been there for 30 odd years and they have a good reputation with the locals. Not like it's in a big city or anything. I am most worried about it being too big. The 6 was definitely too big. However I thought I would trust them and see.
My husband after he calmed down said if they do anything to the setting that spoils it or its too big and it needs a quarter of a size readjust that next time we are in NYC he will take it to the person who made it and get a new setting. It was handmade but it's only a simple solitare setting. If they damage the stone then I can't even think about that but that's rather extreme and should not happen.
I used this jeweler to mend my mums ER ring. Her stones were loose and it needed new prongs as they were all worn away. They also smoothed the ring for her as her wedding band and dug a sharp edge into it and redipped it (18kt white gold). They did a beautiful job, the prongs were so neat. The ring looked brand new. So hopefully all will be Ok.

This is my sore finger, this is after not wearing my rings for 3 weeks and it has healed a lot so you can imagine what it was like before. I have big knuckles though and slender fingers. I hope 5.75 will not be too big, it's going to spin once on but at least I won't be in tears trying to take it off. Fingers crossed it's not too big, it has put my mind at rest somewhat with the replies saying half a size is the right thing to do.

I got it back and they did a great job phew!! It looks great and the size is perfect. It feels different as I have been used to it tight for so long and now it has some movement on my finger. It looks better than before as it seems to make my fingers look slimer, it sits better. Yay! So happy I get to wear my ring in comfort. Now to find a new wedding band...
