Resetting my M AVC three stone

Hi Mike! You can post whatever you like in here, believe me, I don't mind!

Wow, I think the ring Gypsy posted is so beautiful!!!

I love that one. I tried it on before and it was really different yet very comfortable.

Thanks Packrat,
Regarding my drawings, I used to give them to my clients but I often found that they weren't always wanted or looked after well, about four years ago I started keeping them myself and putting them in albums.
I now have four big scrap books full of thousands of my drawings, I really like flipping through them and remembering the different projects so my plan is to keep the original drawings myself from now on.
I also have a large collection of original hand painted antique jewelry designs from 1900-1960 in another scrap book.

I give my clients either a scan or copy of the drawing and I suppose if I saw that a client was really wanting to keep the original for themselves (so long as they are going to look after it) I could probably be convinced to hand over the original.

I do often like to push the boundaries with my stock work but I would never surprise a client with something really different on a commission, these details will always be worked out during the design stage.
While I'm drawing up the concepts that were asked of me I often also think of original ideas that the client might not have thought of, but that's only a design suggestion so there is no commitment to go that route.

Thanks again all for being interested in my work, if there are any other questions I'll do my best to answer them if I can.

Mike.

Mike, I'd love to see you add more of these drawings to your website or facebook. They are amazing! You should consider publishing them, but then I suppose you run the risk of others stealing your ideas. :(sad

Was I correct that you send an album of the process photos to the owners of the piece? I thought that I had read that somewhere.

I think having a copy of the sketches would be fun-I don't understand why someone would want an amazing piece of jewelry but then be so flippant about the sketches-that's a lot of time/energy/thought on a piece of paper. Maybe I'm overly sentimental but, my copy is getting framed.

Hi Christina,
We are working on updating the design section of our website, my brother and I do the website ourselves so it's going to take us a while to get it the way we want it. Funny you should talk about stolen ideas, I just saw a terrible copy online of the ring I made for ZL

I do not have any set rules for what I do in presenting my pictures or drawings to a client, I can sometimes present them in a book or maybe on a Disk.

One day soon I do hope to publish a book of my designs and finished images of pieces I have made, I just enjoy sharing an insiders view of the old traditional techniques of jewellery making.

I'm happy to answer any other questions if anyone has them.

Mike R--Thank you for coming here and sharing. I'm not just *saying* I'd buy that coffee table book of your designs, I WANT ONE! A big, hardcover beauty that I can browse whenever I need some inspiration. (I don't design, just general inspiration.)

Packrat--I'm with you! If I had a beautiful drawing of my ring I would have it professionally framed, or at least preserved in some way.

Thanks Haven,
I have a few antique jewellery renderings framed, they look great on a wall.

I'm sure they do.
You know, I'm thinking framed jewelery renderings are a WONDERFUL alternative gift option for all of us PSers when the real thing is out of budget. I see a new niche market popping up . . .

Packrat--I cannot wait to see what you end up doing for this new setting!

Computer crashed. On London's kindle. Sucks, don't know how people do this on phones or laptops. I like my big monitor.

Looking forward to getting started and enjoying the process..even tho I'm still not certain of a couple things..they'll work themselves out as we go I suppose!

Hopefully I don't cause Mike to pull his hair out! :rodent:

I've decided it's meant to be. Aus and Nz were my grampa's favorite places in the world, I got my love of stones and jewelry from him and gramma. Gramma will understand the significance and I know grampa would approve.

Aww! I love this! I got my love of jewelry from both my grandmothers as well! And I can't wait to see what you come up with! You're going to be in great hands! =)

Thanks! Mike's back in Nz so should have news soon!!!

It is funny but NZ is right at the top of the list of places I would like to visit. And now I know what I want for a souvenir! :naughty:

packrat I chatted with him via email on his return trip and have been like a kid on Christmas eve checking my emails! lol It's so exciting. You will have yours before me, so it's going to be so exciting watching your process (should all work out as you hope)!

diamondseeker I'll go with you!! Just tell me when and I'll have my bags packed and ready!

I'm coming in a little late to the game but was there a reason why you went from 5 stone to 3 stone other than upgrading the size of stones? The reason I'm asking is b/c I'm trying to design my own graduated 5 stone ring at the moment. I don't want to make a costly mistake in the design process that I may regret later when I actually get the ring. Thanks!

I liked the idea of the five stone. The stones were too small..the ends were just too small for a stand alone ring. If I were to try it again in a graduated style I wouldn't do any smaller than. 25's on the ends. Then probably .40's and then maybe a .55-.60 or so. I wouldn't do that type of step down setting either-would keep the stones on the same level.

So, Packrat, where are you at with your project? Have you been able to come up with some ideas that you would like to move forward with? I"m not sure if I you said when you hope to get started...

Emailed Mike this am and said the budget would be increased b/c I want to work with him. It will take longer to get the money together but no biggee. Still debating the center. May get some fakes to play with and go from there. Still wanting bezels..definitely the pinches..

That's how I decided on the size of my center. I played around with a few cheapies to get a feel for what I felt the most comfortable with. I found it helpful. I like the idea of the .7 you mentioned before, but they look fantastic now, so tough choice! I'll be looking forward to your journey with you decide to get started! =)
